So i picked up another lightning after years off buells. Its a x9sx 2007. Like many of these used bikes it needed/s a bit of TLC. The clutch level wasn't engaging till the very end of it its travel so i decided to adjust it after seeing a youtube video... yeah... well the first of those videos suggests loosening the cable adjustment, then clutch cover adjustment... well now everything is effed. I can adjust a lot of things but nothing seems right now. The level is either too stiff (doesnt really move) or too loose (and doesnt return when released) the clutch whines rather than engaging once put into gear. Too much has changed for me to have any idea how to just put it back to the way it was and its unrideable and i dont have a truck to get it to a dealer. Im in richmond VA if anyone feels like helping a fellow Bueller out of his foolishness... ... or just tell me how to fix it. that would be great too. |

Maybe the lips on the cover are broken. |

remove the clutch cover, loosen the cable adjuster at the front head, remove the lock thingy in the center of the clutch, unscrew the center adjuster till loose, then run it in till it seats lightly. Back it off a third of a turn. Replace the lock thingy. Adjust the cable so ya have a little slack and replace the cover. Test it. If it's still really bad, something is broken. If it's just off a teeny bit, fine tune it with the clutch center adjuster. Check for slack in the cable again, it needs a little bit of free play at the lever. |

enough reading, rewatching youtube, and pondering i decided that i likely had over-tightened the clutch adjustment screw... a few more attempts proved this correct. So for clarity to anyone else that wanders down the path that i did. When turning the screw counter clockwise if it is resisting turning AT ALL, that is what the video means by "stops". You can keep turning it with pretty light effort until it actually "stops" but this will be waaay too tight. |

You should not need more than a finger and thumb to turn the adjustment screw and this helps prevent getting it too tight. Guess you watched that other video. |

any one can tell you how to do it, but showing some one with a hands on demonstration is the best way. youtube would be next best thing. but you still won't be able to do it yourself unless you understand what each part does and how it changes when you adjust it each way. i have had no problems adjusting my clutches. when i do; go so far as to fine tune it 'by feel' at the lever, but you are a 3 hours drive from me. i would suggest that you try following the manual VERBATIM. read a step, do a step. read a step, do a step. |

Unadjust the cable at front of motor, then adjust the clutch at the clutch pack in until it touches then a quarter turn back off. Adjust the lever so it has a little slack--it is a feel thing--with the front adjuster. |
