Wife and I were riding to a Rocker/Mod thing last night and her '09 with 8600 miles died 2 blocks from the event. She said the fuel light came on briefly then it died. Oil light stayed on, and engine light stayed on. Fuel pump was not priming normally, did not make the typical whine. This morning I checked the fuses, fuel pump blown, replaced, turned the key, flipped the starter switch and it started to prime and made an even more bizarre noise. I did not attempt to start it. Checked fuse again and it was blown again. I pulled the left peg and cover off and checked for any external wire chafing on the pump and it's all good. Is this the infamous '09 bad pump batch? This is the reason I like carbed bikes.

The only way to tell would be to pull the fuel pump and check the internal wiring.

If the wiring is good, bench test the pump.

I'm not sure if the Walbro 521 fuel pump that is used in the Mustangs can be used in the 09 bikes.

Yes it is the 09 pump issue. Replace fuse, don't let it run low on gas till you replace the pump.

Oh and if it is carbed, you wouldn't even get out of your driveway without something exploding. : )

Is it best just to get the whole pump assembly from American Sport Bike or do the Walbro thing?

It depends on how much you want to spend. The Walbro pump is a little over $100 and the pump from American Sport Bike is $360.

The thing I was concerned with Terry was the compatibility. From what I had read on here there was a question as to whether they would work in the '08-'09 models.

I was hoping someone would chime in on that. Maybe try calling a few auto parts stores to see if they have one in stock to do a comparison.

I know the '10 went with PWM controlled fuel pumps so they are definitely different.

I don't think the Walbro will work the 08-09 have a different electrical connector.

Kinda of a dumb dumb follow up question here to this. Can I jack further back on the muffler than the "jacking point"? I don't have the lifts for this bike. I have it in a front chock, if I lift on the designated lift point it wants to lift the whole bike. What are my options here? Can I tie down the handlebars to the chock and lift the back up that way or will it slide off the jack? Ideas please! Thanks.

There are two jacking points one in the front and one just before the outlet. As long as the jack is somewhat underneath the rear exhaust bracket it should be ok.

If you do tie the front down be sure to compress the forks some.

What kind of jack are you using? You could build a platform to bolt to the top of the jack out of 3/4" plywood and some 2x4s.

I'm using a scissor jack, only thing low enough to get under it. There is a Drummer on this and I didn't notice the back jack point. Is it OK to be on the exhaust bands? or just in front of that? I'll build something today to cradle it.

I'm not too familiar with the Drummer but if you contact Kevin at kdfab.com he can tell where it is/is not safe to put the jack.

He builds some pretty tough cans though.

I had my bike with a Drummer on it jacked up. Just off the jack points or on the bands didn't matter. She held strong.

I replaced my 2009 XB12Ss pump with 2010 model to avoid fuel pump fuse blowing in hot conditions. 2010 pump is suppose to be beefier, more robust. It fits other year bikes. You just need to swap the pressure regulator from the prior year. I got the info directly from HD.

Be very careful in replacing the fuel pump. Learned the hard way. You have to ease in the fuel pump in small increments using the four bolts evenly, making sure that the rubber O-rings do not get pinched. If you feel much resistance in rotating the bolt - its because the O-ring (2) is getting pinched. I ended breaking both o-rings the first time around.
