Okay- I'm not trying to start the great oil debate of 2012. I know thats been covered umpteen times on here and everyone has their preferred brands. I only ask b/c I ran across some pretty negative remarks about Royal Purple while lurking around on that 'other' buell forum. I'm currently running RP 20/50 (NOT the max cycle) in my 07 12r. I havent experienced any clunky shifting or anything like that but I do feel as though I might be running a tad hot based on the fact that my fan runs constantly after an hour or so of riding (RP, like most other synth brands, claims their oils promote cooler op temps). Prior to that I was using Castrol 4T conventional v-twin 20/50. I only put the RP in the motor last change out. Crankcase still has Castrol. I'm due for a change soon since I've been riding all year due to winter never really having shown up. One thing I dont want to do is switch brands every oil change. I want to find something to stick with from here on out. I wouldve ordered some RP max cycle and changed both holes next week, but what I read earlier has prompted me to seek further opinions. I suppose all the bad talk towards RP is totally hearsay, but perhaps I'm the type that believes everything I read on the internet! |

I ran RP in the racebike but for a couple months during cool season. No complaints but didn't run in the Summer. Ran RP ATF the primary however for the slipper clutch. Once E B R announced the Amsoil gig, I switched to Amsoil |

I've been using this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GAN3H6/ref=ox _sc_act_title_9 For about 10k miles. Seems to make the parts slippery enough. I was mainly concerned with the flash off point of the chosen oil. Over the life of my '06 Uly (25k mi) I have used: Mobil 1 V-Twin oil Mobil 1 Full synthetic Valvoline Vr1 synthetic Shell Rotella Valvoline VV855 Racing Synthetic 20W50 (current) |

Teeps- you've never felt leery about changing oils so frequently? I dont personally have any evidence for that being detrimental to an engine, again just hearsay. I suppose I'll run the RP again for another 2.5-3k and see what happens |

Not at all. A good friend rolled over 200k on his Dodge van. Changed oil every 3k miles or so. He used what ever was on sale at the time; that met the API rating (at the time) and weight. |

I've used all sorts of oil, never had any problems. Just use the grade specified. I have now switched to AmsOil....If Buell likes it, then I do too! |

Mobile 1 4T in the transmission seems to work better than the Vtwin in the same spot, not sure what I'm putting in the engine when I remove the break in oil from the top end rebuild. |

Amsoil 20W-50 MCV in both holes since I bought the XB12R with 8,100 miles on it. Changed it at the recommended intervals. Now at 23,750 and hasn't missed a beat. I'm very happy with it. |

I ran RP race 20/50 for a while- I LOVED how my Trans felt with it. |

yeah, I decided to give it a second chance so I put some fresh RP 20-50 (again not the max cycle) before going to Deal's Gap this weekend. Trans feels pretty good. before I was running conventional in the primary. My fan never kicked on while riding this weekend - temps were nice and cool up there. The oil is finally showing up on the stick where it needs to be on a consistent basis. I attribute the disappearing oil from the last change to the fact that it was the bikes first go round with full synth. Ive heard several guys say that RP is all hype but I'm pretty happy with it for the moment |

I've been through a few oils as well as RP. But (like a lot of other people) when Buell got the deal with Amsoil, I switched too. Haven't noticed my ride running any cooler but it does seem a bit smoother. '08 XB12R 28,000 mi. The extra heat you mentioned could just have been your oil level not being high enough. In mine there's a noticeable difference in temps between the middle and the low side of the stick. Remember to always check the level. It's a pushrod v-twin, they're going to eat a little oil. |

RP is good stuff, but I'm an AMSOIL guy, specially since they support EBR. Hell, I even became a dealer because of it |
