Hey Folks, Want to swap my XB12Ss tail to a Uly for more passenger comfort and ability to mount Touratech cases. The goal is to have a set of Uly parts for a full swap when I go cross-country. Don't wanna drill holes or modify the stock tail. Scrounged up these part #'s from another thread: L0046.1AKYBQ TAILSECTION STRUCTURAL CTR,MAGNESIUM TON $193.00 L0009.1AKYBQ TAILSECTION, RH, MAGNESIUM TONE $112.00 L0010.1AKYBQ TAILSECTION, LH, MAGNESIUM TONE $112.00 L0076.1AKA BATTERY PAN $41.65 M0075.1AK TRUNK PAN ASSY $34.95 Y0401.1AKC TAIL LIGHT $57.00 M0755.1AK BRACKET, LICENSE PLATE $23.80 N0025.1AKAYCE SEAT, FULL STANDARD, ORANGE/BL $111.00 N0526.1AKYBP FOOTREST SUPPORT,RIDER,LH,GRAPHITE GREY $159.00 N0527.1AKYBP FOOTREST SUPPORT,RIDER,RH,GRAPHITE GREY $159.00 N1016.1AK TAIL RACK W/GRAPHIC $105.00 N0008.1AKBYBQ HANDLE, GRAB, PASS LH, MAGNESIUM TONE $59.20 N0009.1AKFYBQ HANDLE GRAB, PASS RH, MAGNESIUM TONE $59.20 C0083.1AK COLLAR, TAIL RACK $5.20 N0018.1AK TAIL RACK DETENT $3.83 H0205.1AK MASTER CYLINDER, REAR $57.80 H1522.1AK BRAKE LINE ASSY, REAR $43.35 H0419.1AK BRACKET, REAR BRAKE LINE $6.60 N0006.1AK FOOTPEG KIT, RIDER, LEFT AND RIGHT $86.55 N0042.1AK FOOTPEG KIT, PASSENGER, LEFT AND RIGHT $92.65 N0320.1AK SHIFT LINKAGE ASSY $22.95 N0802.1AK BRACKET, SHIFTER $19.50 Total $1,565.23 A couple of questions. 1) Are the above parts in RED really necessary for this conversion? i.e. is there any reason why my existing rear brake parts won't bolt right up? 2) Any other parts listed above unnecessary? 3) Any parts I'm leaving out? And lastly, where's the current recommended vendor to buy OEM parts from these days? I used to buy everything from Tripp at Precision HD but that doesn't seem very active anymore. Thanks! Nels |

You shouldn'need the brake parts you highlight in red, as the SS and Uly models share the same swingarm and brake line components. You can also re-use some of your other original parts so that you don't require these either: L0009.1AKYBQ TAILSECTION, RH, MAGNESIUM TONE $112.00 L0010.1AKYBQ TAILSECTION, LH, MAGNESIUM TONE $112.00 (You can re-use your originals which are the same casting, but may need to drill and tap some of the fixing holes as they will be blank castings on yours. N0320.1AK SHIFT LINKAGE ASSY $22.95 N0802.1AK BRACKET, SHIFTER $19.50 (again you should be able to use your original no problem) |

Trojan, thx for confirming the brake components! I remember seeing somewhere that the Uly grab bars attach to the Tailsection rails via a drilled hole that would be exposed when converted back to Ss. Looks like it's gonna cost me $250 for the convenience of not drilling the rails. Looking at the 2 shifter setups it looks to me that the Uly shifter is lower and slightly forward. Is the Ss shifter location a non-issue with the Uly footpegs? Thanks! Nels |

Looks like it's gonna cost me $250 for the convenience of not drilling the rails. If I remember correctly (and it has beena while since I did it) the Uly grab rails attch to the Ulysses tail section, so when you remove the tail it comes away with handrails attached. If you look carefully at your stock side rails/subframe you'll see that there are 'extra' mounting bosses cast into it that are designed to fit the Uly tail piece. This means that you jyust have to tap the right thread into the unfinished bosses and don't have any holes in the subframe that show on the outside When I converted my Uly to SS spec I kept the original Ulysses side rails and fitted an SS tail unit and seat/batery box/undertray. I also retained the footrests/gear linkage etc from the Uly, so never really compared the two closely. However I think you should be able to retain your stock gear linkage even if you use the Uly footrest setup. You could of course retain your stock footpegs and drill the Uly subframe to use the stock SS passenger peg mounts (even eaiser if you keep your original side rails?

I was the 1st one to do this swap. Mating a Uly tail to the STT. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/287637.html?1182817666 IIRC The brake line from the SS/STT is shorter than the Uly, and the way the master cylinder is mounted is different. You can use the same master, but I THINK you need the brake line. |

Here's my 2006SsX with uly saddle. I used the original sideframe by drilling some holes. Just moved the frame for the battery.

Thanks for all the replies! I'll try it w/my stock brakeline and if it doesn't work should be able to pick up one cheaper than the dealer. Tdm, looks great! Am I correct in thinking that the holes you had to drill in the sideframe would be visible with the stock Ss seat on? Was the only other underseat mod you needed was moving the battery? The stock undertrays worked? I'm kinda thinking I can fab my own license/turn signal holder. Thanks again all! Nels |

I'll save you the trouble, it won't. The Uly uses a longer brake line, so if you are putting the Uly peg mounts on, you need the brake line. |

I'm confused, why not just buy the one you want to begin with instead of going to the trouble of changing the bike up? Just wondering. |

Blackm2, I did buy the bike I wanted to begin with. For every situation to date it has been perfect for me, including 2 4k+ mile trips to CA and back. I'm planning an extended trip that will span 2 weeks and 8k+ miles that I'd like to do 2-up with my wife as she has no interest in following on her Ducati as she did on those past 2 trips. The better passenger seating and the desire for bigass Touratech aluminum cases for our belongings make the Uly tail a perfect fit. For everything else I do not need nor want a Uly and wouldn't buy one just for 1 long trip. I have 4 motorcycles and no room for another. So what if for ~$1500 I can get all the parts necessary to convert my bike for long road trip I take once every couple of years? Nels |

Forerunner, I have the same reasons for thinking about it. I want a comfortable 2-up seat on a Lightning XB12SS. It's also fun to mix and match part to come up with something unique that works better than the original. |

Hello, I've done this mod for a better seat for me and the wife. The original Ss seat isn't that good. I bought a trunkpan, lockholder, second hand tail and a low seat. The tail is painted in the color of the side frame of the Ss. Drilled the holes in the frame and bolted the pieces together. The holes are visible with the original seat. But when i want to rebuild the holes can be filled and painted. The tunkpan of the uly is lower. I used the original batterypan. With some homemade brackets i lowered the batterypan. The other parts are re-positioned. The lock is placed at the underside in the tail. Fun thing to do and rides/ looks better for me.

Forerunner, I have everything on your list except: n0025.1akayce seat n0006.1ak foot peg kit, rider n0320.1ak shift linkage n0802.1ak bracket, shifter from my 06 Uly that I am parting out. No damage to any of the parts other than the finish is worn a little thin in places from lots of miles. I would let the whole works go for $500 shipped in the US. |

If I were to swap my Uly suspension to an SS, would I need a different belt ? |

Merc, my understanding is that the Uly and Ss use the same belt. I'm sure someone will jump in and correct me if I'm wrong. Nels |

Yes, the Uly and the Ss use the same belt. Just thinking I would like my Uly lowered. I think all you need is a shock and someone to trade forks with. |
