I know they have different bodywork and subframe/seats but are there any mechanical differences between the two bikes? Thanks, Hugh | ||

Same frame, motor, swingarm, belt, wheels(minus tire), airbox cover*, gauges* and other minor things. Just about everything else is different - suspension, subframe**, seat, fairing, handle bars, grips, and some other minor things. If I was bored I could make an itemized list of whats the same and whats different, but that would take too much time and I figured you wanted the basics. To sum it up, mechanically they are the same bike, unless the STT is an 07, and it has quite a few differences with the motor and fuel injection. *Slight differences in decals/colors depending on year **Both come from the same mold, holes are drilled differently depending on what bike it is for. | ||

The STT can be fun in the mountains, and can be done up pretty close to Uly/GS type of adventuring. A small fairing adds wind protection and grips do nicely with the addition of heated elements and the Buell switch pod. If that is the sort of thing you are thinking of. I may try and add hard luggage to mine...   STT is missing the rear portion of the Uly front fender, so the motor catches more crud. | ||

OK it looks like the main difference is the STT has longer suspension. I'm looking at buying a Buell for a 2 month tour of Europe next year. The only problem I have with the Lighning/STT is the tiny subframe. No room for luggage and a Hungarian Honey. Would it be pretty straight forward to attach a Uly subframe/seat/etc to a Lightning assuming I could find all the parts? | ||

One other question do the pre 08 12SS and 12STT have the same limited steering lock as the pre 08 Ulys? Thanks, Hugh | ||

Not exactly straight forward. It can be done, but it is a bit involved due to the differences involved with the under seat wiring.
All XB12SS, STT, XT bikes of all years have the same limited steering. The 2008+ XB12X and XP were the only bikes to get the offset forks and trees. | ||

Sorry to be unclear in my previous post but I believe the STT has the shorter suspension. Soft luggage should work fine on the STT, and they made a two-up kit for them... or you can just pick up a SS seat and pretty much any XB or 1125 model passenger pegs and brackets for two up riding. While they may have a tighter steering radius than the newer XB's, I found my XB is much easier to maneuver at parking lot speeds, and in much tighter circles, than my Cyclone. So there are certainly tougher bikes to ride. | ||

Congratulations on the Uly. I've rented a couple in Germany as well as owning one in the US. I love Bavaria on a Ulysses  |
