I noticed the drive belt on my XB12S is a bit loose.
About an inch of movement with light pressure, as checked on the top side, between the two pulleys.

The back side of is free of cracks or splits, the tooth area is also smooth and free of cracks. At least without a magnifying glass..!

The bike has just over 16,000 miles of splitting lanes in So. Cal.

So...just how loose will these belts go without breaking ?

Thanks

Mike

What year is it? Older bikes have a scheduled replacement of 15k or 25k miles, but I recommend replacing sooner. I would use your current belt as a good spare that will be easy to install on the side of the road in the event yours breaks.

From reading other people's broken belt posts, the only warning sign they saw was that the belt got a little loose just before it broke.

2005

I have a new one ready to go in.
The rear tire will be replaced this weekend, I guess it's a good time for the new belt also. As noted, will hang onto it.

I really haven't kept a watch on the broken belt posts, on my old 12R, the rubber started cracking between the teeth, that was obvious...!

Thanks all.

Mike

The belt on my 2007 Firebolt has 42,000 miles of southern California lane splitting on it and still looks good. Wish the motor lasted as long. LOL

New belt (and rear tire) is on.
The old belt...LOOKS....great under close inspection, just a bit loose. About an 1" of up-down movement with a moderate one finger push.
Maybe I could have left it on..(?), will hang onto it for later possible use.

Should go on easy on the side of the road if you do break the new one so worth keeping.
