the buell(2007) has been diagnosed with a bad voltage regulator. of course the remedy is a new one. but my concern is what actually caused the voltage regulator to go bad in the first place. the battery has been tested and is fine. i am currently running tourmaster heated gear which i have for several years and a power outlet (which i installed this past august) by battery tender which connects to the regular battery tender cable. is the fact that i am running the heated gear and the power outlet at the same time the cause for the voltage regulator failure? i have noticed that the power outlet has constant power even when the bike is off, which has not caused any issues. i thought the charging system was the same as a uly, which actually runs a oem power outlet and heated grips. should i disconnect the power outlet when using the heated gear? |

Motorcycles of all brands burn up voltage regulators. They just burn up from the heat. It's actually better for the shunt type regulators common to most bike to run higher loads like heated gear because they don't have to convert that power to heat (the PM stator makes a certain amount of power, whatever power is not used by the bikes electrical systems is shorted to ground.) There are aftermarket regulators that may be more robust. Before you get a new regulator though, are you sure its not just the 77 connector? |

get a voltage reader installed on your dash, I have one on mine, and a lot of other Uly riders do too because I have heated gear, gps, heated grips. i wanted to put on an extra set of lights in the past but had the same questions you have. But a voltage meter reader will give you a heads up on how your charging system is running. I also charged my cell phone while riding too. So many things you can add to your bike and use. I had the charging problem happen on my uly in 2007 the male female connector was arching and started to melt, a quick fix was the electricians grease then off to the shop for replacement. I was lucky I just had to replace the connectors. Then bought extras of the parts replaced in case it happens again. |

oh yeah i forgot to mention it is already at the dealership waiting on parts. i just did not have the time right now to mess with the whole process. it may cause me a bite in the wallet now but i will take any advice for future trouble shooting. you dont think the dealer would steer me wrong do ya? winkwink @ kathy~ where did you pick up your voltage reader and who installed it? |

link to LED voltage meters, RatBuell has the one on top I have the one on the same page underneath http://www.customdynamics.com/LED_battery_gauge.ht m The mechanic who greased my connector up so i could finish my trip said if the connector got any worse the problem would have spread to the rest of the charging system. It was a common ULY problem. Did you take your bike to Baltimore HD store ask for Jp to look at your bike. He drags a Buell M-2 he works on my Buells |

American Sport Bike has a couple different meters, two of them also work as a shift point indicator (multiple modes). Think I need to get one for my 9R |

I have the single LED one on the dash and an analog gage on the bars. The analog lets me see the fluctuations. |

Jp is the man in that shop he has M2 and another Buell drags a V-rod too. My single dash mount voltage meter, the only complaint I have about it is the brightness of the green light at night. but it was a clean install on the dash |
