Let me start off by saying I did post this in the knowledge vault as instructed but as I suspected I haven't gotten a single response. So.. let me try here. I need to know if undercutting a transmission is necessary. I have a 2003 XB9R with 10K on it in mint condition that had a locked up transmission. I split the case and I found damaged gears, a bend shifter fork tube and damaged shifter forks. Many of the gears look ok but several are damaged. Case is perfect. Anyway, in addition to buying a bunch of very expensive gears I have been told that magnafluxing, undercutting and proper assembly are crucial. Again, this is a fairly expensive process. I am not a racer. I am just repairing what needs to be repaired but I want to do it right because it was a pain in the butt removing and splitting this case. I feel magnafluxing is a definate because I can't tell if a gear might have a hairline crack in it but what about the undercutting and assembly. Mark at R&D was very informative but between buying the new parts and the labor charge I am looking at around $1000.00 easy. The magnafluxing, undercutting and assembly is $500.00. I also have to buy between 3 and 4 gears, 2 shifter forks and a fork shaft. The gears seem to run around $125.00ea new. The forks are around $50.00ea. Just asking for some advice. |

I think the stock gears are already undercut a little from the factory. Look at the dogs carefully, and you should see it. It's subtle. |

I've had this service done, but haven't put it all back together yet, so i can't testify to the performance, but i didn't wanna have another shifter fork bend so i went ahead and ponied up. Im lookin fwd to buttery smooth shifting though |

Mark told me the factory undercuts the dogs but they are a factory generic undercut not specific to every gearset. What he was talking about was specifically undercutting the dogs for the smoothest shifting operation possible. The problem I have is dropping over $1000.00 into a transmission on a bike thats not really worth that much and that is completely dissembled. Also, I am not a racer. As long as the bike shifts and runs good I am cool with it. I'm an old guy that generally drives cruisers!! I love this bike though and want to do it right. |

I have decided to have them build me a set of Andrews gears for my XB. Mark sounds like he really knows how to make transmission improvements! It really is nice to ride a machine with a positive and smooth shifting trans! |

So... I have all the gears out. The entire tranny is apart. I have the service manual but its next to impossible for me to figure out what gears go where. They aren't marked and the service manual just shows simple pictures. I am trying to figure out what gears I need to replace but I can't figure out which ones they are and the part numbers for them. Any help is appreciated! |
