If CATs are needed to meet emissions then CATs are going to end up on our motorcycles. Period. No big deal. They work, so that is what happens.

I want to say the requirements are 2006 and 2008. It comes in two stages, basicly we get cali requirements in 2006 and cali gets new ones then in 2008 the rest of the nation gets calis requirments again.i am pretty sure our time line is 2006 and 2008 but i could be one year ahead on both years because we need time to get our product up and runnning. |

CATs are going to end up on our motorcycles.
If I'm no mistaken Kawasaki already has them in place of having a muffler. On some of their bikes anyway. |

The Buells are EPA legal as of right now through 2006 but there real close and will succeed without a cat for 2008. |

Glitch Kaw does show small cats in their cutaways for some current Cali models.
I've read published statements by two different people at Buell saying they will meet Cali 2008 without a cat.( For whatever thats worth).
I've heard (RUMOR) that CARB is considering requiring M/Cs to start doing the every two year smog testing then just like they do cars now. If so that will create a lot of fallout among the riders, retailers and makers.

I dont get the attitude against cats? You have at least one on your car or truck & its not bothering you. hell I have one on my R1 & I could care less. Creates a little extra heat but it feels great on a cool night. |

The Z1000 that has that funky four barrel exhaust is HEAVY! A friend of mine that just replaced it with one of those Ti deals tried cutting it up to see why it was so heavy. It was a honeycomb inside. My guess it was a cat. |

kids are, er, uh, ehem, what they are, alright!
we'll all have cats, eventually, and they won't be awful, but when I see some of the lower-hanging fruit the epa COULD go after, I kinda wonder why they're coming after scoots . . . .

asside from the heat I dont see the others as being of any consequence. Weight? Its honeycomb in a pipe. Complexity? See weight response. Part to be replaced....uhhh you own a Buell, replacing parts is part of the ritual.
Besides that I think a cat will outlive the engine by a huge margin. remember Cats have 9 lives |

Problem with cats is that they're only clean on longer trips after they've heated up. For short trips they're actually quite dirty. |

Buell hasn't had to introduce a second air system yet so I would think that would come before catylitic converters. |

Harley's have Cats in California and Buell doesn't. Superior engine? Could be. Any other ideas? |

That honeycomb you speak of breaks down and clogs airflow. I know. I've seen the one out of my Saturn! Engine performance got crappy before diagnosis. Who knows how long it had been that way?
Cats suck! Any questions? The point is Moo LOL! It's coming anyway. Just do what I do. Run straight headers until smog time... Then hook it up again. |

Guys...Please don't confuse CARB and EPA requirements and dates. EPA is usually two years or more behind the California Air Resources Board.
Per Erik at the Buell 20th anniversary in his presentation on the XB12's he stated that they passed EPA 2006 and were extremely close to passing CARB 2008 requirements which should be EPA 2010 standards. Perhaps Buell has refined the system to meet CARB 2008 since then.
Compliments of the aftermarket, we don't have a thing to worry about until the States decide to smog and noise test motorcycles. Then the burden remains with both the manufacturers and aftermarket to provide us with legal mods that will maintain/increase the power of our bikes. |
