Ok Im psyched to change the oil/filter/trans fluid in my xb9sx and also oil etc in my vtx1800...wallimart had supertech filters for both bikes, got mobile 1 syn 15-50w for the buell and castrol 10-40w dino for the vtx...I get home and start on it right away, get a phone call..its the ac guy, wants to come over earlier for reg maint. ..ok no prob..nice enough guy but he yacked..and yacked and yacked some more...all this while im warming up and changing oil...well I get done with the buell and start on the vtx...the guys been jawjacking the whole time btw..then I realized I put the wrong oil in the buell..put the castrol 10w-40 in both oil and transmission...sh#t! And yep hes still yammering away...course i gotta take the blame here, but dont think all that blabbing helped much..thought about getting a new filter and more mobil 1 and draining/doing it all over again...then said what the hell and just put the mobil 1 and filter in the vtx...and left the castrol in the buell.. Im gonna change it sooner than normal but wondering if the castrol 10w-40 will damage the transmission in the buell? |

you live in Florida where the temp is nice and warm. I wouldn't leave that thin oil in that V twin. That motor requires 20/50w no thinner ESPECIALLY in warm temps. If you were in Alaska then you'd be ok. Change it now. JMHO |

You could always just drain it out of the Buell using a clean container so you could reuse it in your VTX if it worries you that much, but I wouldn't bother. No harm will come of it. You don't specify if either are motorcycle specific oils, but if the clutch didn't slip any with the 15w50 synthetic, I doubt it will with the 10w40. |

well ive never run either of those weights in a buell so i couldnt tell you. why the 15-50 for it in the first place? but im going to guess the 10-40 regular oil isnt going to do your primary any favors. but then again you were going to put 15-50 in it so id say the same thing about that. id sure drain the primary atleast. its only one quart. but then again youd be replacing it with something else that wasnt really ment to go in there...? i usually just run what it calls for in my stuff, but i have run some thinner oil in them when its around freezing or below, and did do thicker once when we were averaging 100+ temps for awhile. |

No, you should be fine for the time being. Don't worry about it. |

Haha. So far, opinions are 50/50, so you are no closer to answering your question. I still stand by my opinion that you can let it ride until the next change. But like No_Rice said, it's just one quart in the primary. Drain it into the bottle it came from then you don't have to ride around worrying about it. |

The one thing NOT to do is to drain it from the primary, then reuse it in the combustion part of any other engine (like the VTX). If you had any proper gear oils in the primary previously, they have additives that work great for transmission, but that will leave really bad deposits if they ever get in a combustion chamber. I'd probably drain and replace the stuff in the primary just because it would bug me knowing I had the wrong stuff in there. |

The owners manual disagrees. Still, I'd drain everything and start from scratch with Amsoil, I have no idea what is even in the Castorol. |

Yep opinions are at about 50/50....I previously wrote down the oil viscosities for each bike so Im thinking I got it from the owners manual before? If guys here think my oil vis. is too thin then ill get heavier next time...yes Im in s. florida and it gets HOT here!I remember getting some great advice about putting mobil 1 in both engine and trans for the buell on this site...the vtx, main thing is NO ENGERY CONSERVING OIL...the engine and trans use the same oil and will cause the clutch to slip if EC oil is used..so neither the castrol or mobil oil I put in is energy conserving... Ok gonna play it safe im gonna drain and replace buell tranny oil with a quart of heavier mobil 1 ....NEXT oil change im gonna use mobil 1 for both bikes (no chance of putting in wrong bike)and use a heavier viscosity.. any reccomendation on viscosity? Thanks all for the awesome responses! ps. best part is I changed the oil in my lawnmower and rushed it (after the bikes)..forget the full oil pan underneath..as soon as I pull started it the oil/half full oil pan exploded spewing filthy hot oil everywhere..garage..me ...everything...had to laugh at that point! |

"Be sure to hit Froggy up for more knowledge after you burn that motor up. He's a wise old man he is....." Not sure if youre being sarcastic here, but the chances of Castrol 10w-40 burning up my motor are pretty much zero... |
