Hello.... I am new here and have been lurking for a bit. I am interested in buying a Buell Lightning however, I am a little overwhelmed with all the suffixes on the XB 12. I believe I have the Ulysses models and the XB 12ss model somewhat straight. My interests lay mostly with the XB 12s and the XB 12scg. Are there any other differences between these 2 models other than ride height ? Handling, suspension etc ? I see alot of scg models for sale but very few s models. Just wondering if there is a reason for this. Thanks in advance. |

XB12SCG is the XB12S with a shorter suspension and lower seat. Same for 9S vs 9SLow |

I'm a big guy, and got to ride a demo XB12SCG at mid ohio. Compared to my early 9sx (skyline seat), I loved the motor, but hated the seat. Aside from not needing the lower seat, it had sharper edges that made it really uncomfortable to lean off the bike. The really fun part of the S bikes is throwing yourself all over the bike to make it do all sorts of fun excercise in dime splitting and putting it any where on the road at any time on a whim. I was really too big for that bike, and the Uly is a better choice for me, but I really miss that part of the 9sx. There are really two frames... the "big frames" and "the little frames". From there, some have lower seat heights (lower suspension and shaved seats). So just figure out which frame you want, and if you need a low or not (I wouldn't recommend a low unless you needed it). The 9's are all small frame. The Uly's are all big frames. I think most of the later 12's are big frames, and maybe some of the early ones were short frames (I'm sure somebody will chime in here). The XB12SS was the first "big frame XB12" I sat on (and boy did it fit nicely). |

Thank you for the above responses. I appreciate your help in clarifying these 2 models.... |

I have a 12Scg. Personally, I find nothing wrong with the seat, but I'm a short guy - 5'7" - so I appreciate the lowered ride. Does the Scg have a short or long frame? Anybody know? |

The Scg has the short frame and swingarm. I have a 2005 12Scg and use either a 12S seat or the Buell select seat to raise the seat height just a bit. I am 5'10" and it is an awesome fit for me! |

The last year for the 12s was 2008, probably why there isn't as many of them. They did however continue making the 12ss up until the closure. |

The 9S, 9SX, 12S, and 12Scg all use the small frames. The larger frame is used on the 12SS, 12STT, 12X, and 12XT. The larger frame has 1/2 gallon more fuel capacity and 2 degrees more rake for a slightly less flickable ride. Here's a good article about the 2010 Buell's. It has helpful information about the models and no annoying popup ads. It has links on the right for earlier models. I have nothing to do with the site. http://www.topspeed.com/motorcycles/motorcycle-rev iews/buell/2010-buell-lightning-xb12ss-xb12scg-xb9 sx-ar77243.html |
