I have a 2004 XB12S with 33,000 miles on it. I live here in Colorado and ride mostly in the Mountains. My last few rides have been at higher elevations and the bike runs great. But when I come out of the hills to where I live (5,600 feet), the bike will not idle and runs very lean. It does not seem to want to adjust back to the lower elevation. I checked the AFV after the ride (ecmspy) and it was at 81%. I reset it before the ride to 100%. I am going to set the variable to 95% lean and 105% rich for now so it will not lean out that much. (stock was set to 60 and 150). After I reset it back to 100% after the ride, it idles perfect. What sensor adjusts for altitude on the bike and what do you guys think of setting the variable to 95% lean and 105% rich to temporarily fix the problem? (will try that out today). Is this the o2 sensor or another one.

I did a search and did not find the info specific to this problem. Thanks.

O2 sensor will monitor the "gases" and adjust AFV during the closed loop learning. You should be able to just ride at the lower elevation between 2500 and 4000 RPM for about 15 minutes and get back to your normal AFV. Setting it to limit at 95% might produce a very rich mixture when you are at higher elevations and you might lose power up there due to the possibly very rich mixture. If possible bring a computer and your cable so you can adjust if it seems overly rich.

Yesterday I put in an new Bosch o2 sensor and I made a huge difference. Did a ride up around 9600 feet and when I got back home the AFV was at 100. I also set the min. value to 96. Bike ran perfect, pulled stronger and ran very smooth at lower RPMs.

Today I rode up over 11,000 feet and the bike ran great up high and down at lower altitude too. AFV was back at 100% when I got home. It is amazing how much better all around the engine runs with a new o2.

Sweet! Gotta love good fuel injection. I rode a bandit 1250 up Mt. Evans and it ran and even idled perfectly on top. Even the simple 919 ran perfectly (though can't adjust its own idle speed so idled slowly) on Mt. Evans and Pike's peak.
