I'm curious. What would it take to get a XB12r to 160 mph. I don't a 1/4 mile bike and I don't want a track bike. Therefore, the pipes would need to stay somewhat within street legal specs. What would it take, what would it cost? We need 30 to 35 mph on the top end!

It think you could get it to 160 pretty easily if you weren't concerned with how long it took. I would say a few thousand and a full fairing.

LOL....it takes a lot of power to get to those speeds. Ask FMJ how much work & time he invested in his Bonneville Buell to get over 160.

Aaron's "shop mule" M2 went over 153mph with only 1250cc and no fairing at all.

160mph out of an XB is certainly within reach.

Just out of curiosity, if you don't want a 1/4 mile bike and you don't want a track bike, why do you need 160mph?

The AMA supersport bikes are exceeding 160 mph on a regular basis. They supposedly put down around 120 RWHP though I wouldn't be surprised if the top factory machines were closer to 130 RWHP.

You can make that kind of power with your Buell bumped to 1249 cc's and with a well matched and tuned set of heads, pistons, cams, EFI augmentation, and exhaust. I'd say for around four or five grand you could be very close. Not sure you'd need a six speed either, just a change in final drive or primary drive ratio.

Consider that it takes 35% more power to achieve 160 mph versus that required to achieve 140 mph. If a stock XB12R with proper gearing could achieve 140 mph, which it very well may be capable of doing, it would take an additional 33 rwhp to make 160 mph, or around 124 rwhp. Definitely doable.

NR 1249 Kit, Cycle-Rama Stage 3 Heads, 0.600" Cam, S&S Carburetor, Force Pipe,
10.7 Compression, Mobile Pump Gas.

I'm sure you could get near the same with a techlusion or PC-III EFI augmentation system, but you could easily make the 18 HP bump needed to achieve 150 mph.

What is magic about 160 mph?

I should add that NRHS does some good work for high performance streetable engines too.

Well..we routinely run some Hawaii's most isolated roads near the North Shore wide open.. I'm sucking at 130 and those guys are doing 160-165 and waiting for me to catch up at the end of the run.

the main limit is rpm. these 1203 motors are still pulling hard at the rev limiter. if the crank will hold together, a simple dyna ignition in side the cam cover, and a decent downdraft carburetor should allow 7500 rpm and 125 horsepower. the r model should easiy push 160. the s has a lot more drag, and would probably run out of wind at around 150 or a hair less with a skinny guy like me aboard.

not to offend any one if ur not racing on a track why do u need to go 160mph i had a freind die this past tusday going 140 and hit an 18 wheeler head on and it crushed every bone in his body so wanting to go that fast on the street isnt the smartest thing in the world to do but not trying to preach im just saying 160 isnt safe off of a track

Not even close. Doesnt matter how many gears you have, if you dont have the hp it wont run the number. Takes more than just gears to overcome wind drag.
