I removed the rear wheel to change the tires, and now I am having issues getting it back on. I have a feeling a spacer might have fallen out on the brake side at the shop or along the way. In a nutshell, everything goes in fine, but when attempting to put the caliper back on it just won't fit on anymore. You can see in the pic that the wheel is going in "too far", not allowing the caliper to fit in. Am I missing a spacer?

You are not missing a spacer. |

Any idea what the issue could be? When tightening the axle down with the caliper already in place it seizes the wheel in place and the caliper is right against the rotor. No good... |

Really at a loss. Tried everything and I can't seem to figure out what isn't going together correctly. Just seems like it's tightening too much. Very weird. |

Did you clean up the axle and reapply fresh anti-seize to it before attempting to install the wheel? |

Yeah, my process was this: - bikes up on pit bull stand - took the caliper off - took the axle all the way out - put the tire back on, put anti-seize on and tightened the axle down - tried to place the caliper back on and just no room to fit in-between the rotor and bolt slots That's why I was concerned maybe a spacer fell out in the process without me knowing. |

do the spacers typically stay stuck in the swing arm? I just changed both tires today and found no trace of any spacer (12r). everything went back well but ive yet to ride b/c I cant (yet) get pressure in my front brake line. Sorry to hijack your thread. When you screw your axle in does it appear to be in the right spot looking on the left side? My rear caliper was a bit tricky putting back on correctly. Just took a little playing around with |

when i took my caliper off the pads rotated out with it. make sure the pads are positioned correctly. |

Ensure the brake caliper piston is pushed all the way in. |

Ensure the spacer running through the hub between the bearings is in place. The axle needs to go through it. If it somehow got dislodged and you tightened the axle, your bearings are toast. I didn't think the spacer could be dislodged enough to allow the axle passage, but I could be wrong. |

I can get the wheel + caliper fully on, it's just as I do the last few tightening turns it is hitting the bracket on the caliper and in-turn not allowing the wheel to turn. So frustrated. The left side wheel bearing is indented, that's why after re-pulling it off I thought maybe something came off. Sigh, simplest things go wrong. I've done this many times in the past, on my old bike, no issues, but this is a 2010 and is the first time taking the wheels off. |

Where are you located? Might have to come take a look at your issue. |

Sounds like spacer is crushed or dislodged. Inspect it? |

If you remove the caliper from the bracket, 2x 12mm or 13mm bolts, can the bracket then be installed? If so, It's easier to work with the caliper when it is free from the bracket, then you can compress the piston and adjust the pads and caliper mounting hardware bushings as required to reinstall. |

Something else is funny in your picture, why is the brake side spacer pressing so far into the bearing, it looks like the bearing center has been compressed/deflected towards the wheel center, hopefully is is an optical illusion. You didn't by chance over tighten it, and damage the bearing, or is the bearing bad? |

That's what I was thinking. Maybe got messed up. It is indented. Could that have happened at the tire shop? Don't know how I could have done that? |

984gasm, you are most definitely missing the narrow spacer that fits between the rotor-side bearing and the swing arm. That little spacer, only about 3/16" wide, is very important on the 2010 wheel. It not only spaces everything properly but it is the surface for the seal to ride on. This spacer is only used on the 2010 setup because the earlier wheels did not have the external seals. Take a look at the 2 pics below. The spacer I am referring to is item #1. In your pics, it looks like you may have damaged the seal as it was crushed between the swingarm and bearing because that spacer was not installed. You might as well order a new seal at the same time you order the new spacer. Good luck with this! Spacer = item #1, Seal = item #2:

Blake and everyone else, thanks for helping out with this. Motorbike's pic cleared it up. Must have lost the spacer in transport without even knowing it existed. Lame! |

The spacer on the caliper side is missing. Bought a 2010 wheel and had local shop put new tire on. Took the wheel straight from American Sport Bike to them still in box. Put it on bike and caliper wouldn't fit. Called Al and he said go back and have them check their balancer, and sure enough there was my spacer. @$&?-(+*. Wasn't real happy about that because 1. when I called they gave me the "we're pros, we know Wtf we're doing" speech. 2. I torqued my axle and squeezed the swingarm further than it is ever supposed be |

Danair, you crush the seal too? Have to call the tire place tomorrow and see if they have it and then order a new seal. Anyone know if the seal is easy to remove? |

Seal was ok. Good thing the 2010 disc side space is as thin as it is. Of course, I should have been more diligent about the stack up. Just happy I didn't eff up that swing arm. |

BTW, after the big dog gave the we're pros speech on the phone, the tire guy found the spacer when he went to balance the next wheel. To HIS credit, he pulled my w/o and called asking if I was missing a spacer while I was driving there to MAKE them look for it per Al. We had a lively exchange, one pro to another. |
