Hi, I'm in the market for an xb12x or xt. Are there any issues with any of the bikes say from 2006-2009? Thanks! |

Nonsense....a couple of isolated failures does not make a "surfacing problem". |

I just checked out a used 08 Uly. I let it idle for about 3-4 minutes and checked the oil. When I removed the cap on the frame oil immediately started to pour out..is that normal? Also, the cap did not have a dipstick..just a cap...is that normal? I'm a newbie so be merciful |

The cap that requires a key? That's the gas cap. Oil tank is in the swingarm, so that's where the hole is to check the oil, its built into the cap. |

It was the swing arm oil cap I removed. Oil coming out of the gas filler hole would definitely be bad! Cheers (Message edited by Manybikes on September 08, 2011) |

Nonsense....a couple of isolated failures does not make a "surfacing problem". I would agree if the issue was temperature sensors or something like that. For something as critical and substantial as a crank, I'd say a few is cause for concern given the small production numbers. IMHO Manybikes - Mine is an '06 X. Oil has never pored out of the swing arm, shut down or running when I checked the oil. My cap also has a dipstick. I have never seen an '08+ bike, but I would have to guess that it was badly overfilled. Someone smarter please override this opinion if you have better insight. |

I have searched the net and believe that cap should have a dipstick. The bike has low mileage but I am very concerned about how it was maintained and treated. The rear tire is down to the cords, overfilled oil...not good signs} |

Yes the dipstick is part of the cap. (Ignore the razor blade)

Cut your dipstick off to save weight for better mpg? |

Nope, definitely did not have the dipstick. How that would happen defies logic at this time, maybe he put on some other cap..but why? Me thinks I might run away from this one. Thanks for the photo |

By the way, in the photo...were you cutting off your dipstick? |

That pic was from a guide on here, you can modify the stock dipstick and use a meat thermometer to monitor oil temperatures. Good idea on the weight savings |

Froggy somehow manages to get 65mpg on his Ulysses. And that's not Imperial mpg either! It is a mystery to all of us. |

My best was 90mpg imperial on a 12, and 102 on a Blast |

Many people have over filled their oil over the years, treating their Buell like a car, or Japanese bike. It's a pretty common error. These bikes need to be warm, even running, to get a proper reading on oil level. Oil is held in a separate reservoir (swing arm on XB's, oil "bag" on tubers) the oil generally settles back into the engine when the bike sits. So checking oil on a cold engine will give a bad reading... especially if the dipstick has been removed |

If I looked at a bike with the dip stick cut off and had oil pouring out upon removal, I would run the other way fast. |

I would either run away fast like others here have said or I would give a very low offer with a mental budget for fixing stupidity in the near future. I have no idea why some monkey would just cut off the dipstick but he could have filled it upright instead of on the side stand. |

I did run from the deal. With shop time running $100/hr it doesn't take much of a mistake to erase a good deal |

True, I always buy the shop manual for any bike I've owned. Most maintenance is pretty straight forward. I understand that the Buell's are one of the easiest to maintain. |
