After 7 years in & around DC, I bought a house in Takoma Park and must become an official MD resident. This means I also have to title & register by bike in MD. Any recommendations for a "quick & easy" (wink, wink) state safety inspection? List of Items Inspected (no specs): Motorcycle and 3-Wheel MPV (form #23-21C) Steering system Frame Brake system Wheels / tires Fuel system Exhaust system Lights Electrical system Mirrors Windshield Passenger items (hand hold and foot rest) Body items (seat, engine mounts, stand, chain and guard, fenders) Speedometer / odometer The bike was previously titled in WI, where they don't require these types of inspections. So, I'm a bit concerned I might fail - some potential problem areas jump out to me immediately: 1. HID lights (they're white not blue... but HID none-the-less), 2. I have the factory race exhaust (too loud?), and 3. An intermittent speedo/odo (it's on the list of items they inspect). How close do they look at these things? Anyone here failed the inspection as a result of these items? If you've ever failed, why? Thanks! |

Wait and maybe Ratbuell will answer. He's got quite a stable of Buells. Although he used to work at a dealership....The good news is, like cars, bikes are only inspected when they are first registered so if you pass the first time, you are good to go as long as you keep the tags current. Mine was inspected right out of the dealership so I didn't have any issues. You might also check www.monkeyriders.com - there are alot of guys there from the MD area and they might be able to give you the info you are looking for. |

Welcome to MD. MD inspections are very thorough, although for Motorcycles not as much as cars. Lights might be a problem. Inspector may require stock lights. Exhaust "should" be Ok. I have buell race muffler on my Firebolt 12r. Not too loud at idle and lower rpms. Speedo/odo will be a problem if it doesn't register speed and miles while inspector test rides. |

I'm in Poolesville, near Germantown. Welcome to the People's Republic of Maryland comrade! Exhaust will be fine, mine passed with a Jardine. Speedo will be problem if it's not working when they look at it (they took mine for a 10 minute ride around the parking lot, looked at it for about 5 minutes and were done). Shoot me an email if you've got more questions. I don't think any inspection places see enough Buells to know they don't come with HIDs stock. edit- buddy recommended a place in Olney, I think that ain't too far from TP..eastern MoCo. I'll shoot you details if you want " Steering system Frame Brake system Wheels / tires Fuel system Exhaust system Lights - TURN SIGNALS ARE NOT REQUIRED. BUT THEY CANNOT BE ON THE BIKE AND NOT WORKING. Electrical system Mirrors - TWO ARE REQUIRED Windshield Passenger items (hand hold and foot rest) - IF YOU HAVE ONE PIECE OF PASSENGER EQUIPTMENT THEN YOU NEED ALL PASSENGER EQUIPMENT. Body items (seat, engine mounts, stand, chain and guard, fenders) Speedometer / odometer" (Message edited by b00stzx3 on August 18, 2011) |
