I was at the hardly and buell dealership today taking my msf course in pompano. During lunch 2 guys on xb/9/12 rode in and we had a good conversation. Secondly, I own an xb9s and just stock muffler completely and put a straight pipe on and have had alot of backfiring, but it sounds mean, and if you have a vtwin you need to be heard!! Now I have heard everything and everything in between about how its bad and its going to foul out the plugs and burn a piston and all this. You need a race muffler and air element specifically made for buell at a ridiculous price of 600 plus instalation......... and more bullshit. To me there is no magic to an engine air+fuel+spark=combustion. Spark is the spark plug and not much to it there. Air and fuel used to be mixed in a carburator, but now is controlled via computer. I have read many threads concerning an adjustable ECM and what not. How come no one has tried to use a powercommander with a competent dyno runner installing it, and adjusting the air fuel mix every 250rpm? I have a very competent dyno tuner and installer and will have this done in less than a month as soon as my funds allow and will post the results.

Corrupter... have your competent tuner throw the bike (with straight pipes) on his dyno, which presumably has an air fuel ratio meter. See if it's running lean or not. It'll be good to have a "before" run to compare with the final results anyway. If the engine is excessively lean, regardless of if it is fuel injected or carb'd, it will be running excessively hot, thats why people worry. There are people here that have holed a piston due to a leaking carb seal, so it's not just old wives tales. Lots of people here wanting power commander maps. Ask around and you might get somebody to chip in on the costs if two of you match intakes and exhausts and you share the resulting map. |

Thanks for the responses guys. My dyno runner is getting paid to run a custom map for me on the buell. Doing the a/f ratio every 250rpm. If not I could download a couple from powercommanders website. All I was saying is that I cant believe how much the "race kit" costs from harley. I just couldn't bring myself to pay 619 for a tin can "with improved flow", an air element, not even the xb12 box!, and an ecm which is by far way too capricious from what I have read to be worth it. The hardest part in this world today be it motorcycle mechanics, or dentistry is finding competence and people that understand that repeat customers are what its all about. I live in south florida, full of incompetence, however I am choosing the powercommander route rather than the race kit due to the fact that I found a shop that can truly call itself professional. |

The "race kit" is a joke (or at least the ecm is). The only thing it does is improve the bikes sound. |

No, it does more than that, trust me. I've had it on my bike since it came out. I would think that a pure straight pipe would actually be worse than the race can in the low end unless you have something in there to create backpressure (a muffler guru I am not). Definitely can't argue against the sound of one, though. For the 9s, Corrupter, there have been very, very few problems with the race ECMs. The 12s seem to have some issues. The race can is a big improvement over the stock 9 in terms of sound, and it adds a decent percentage to the top end performance. However, it loses grunt on the low end. You can run the race can or any other high flow can without the race ECM, but chances are it will run towards the lean end of things. The ECM can only adjust within a certain percentage range. If you get a PCIII, then the whole point is moot. Adjust away, and make sure you trust the people that do it. |
