Doing a survey here for my sanity. I purchased a 2008 XT with low miles on it (2200) and it appears to be in excellent shape. I cannot verify that the 1000 mile scheduled maintenance was done on the bike prior to my buying it so I am considering letting the sole harley dealership in the are that works on Buells do or redo the 1000 mile maintenance. Assuming all fluids are changed but no parts need done, what should that service cost? I'm interested in knowing what others are paying or have paid for this service...and no, it's no longer under warrantee...and no, I'm not going to do it myself as a first bike checkup. thx |

i think the 1000 mile maintenance is just an oil change and inspection. really super easy to do yourself. |

They are not going to do anything you cant do. It will be $230-280 down the drain. |

$200-300, or $40 and do it yourself. |

Either way, don't assume it was done. Do it and then you know. Info is in the manual. Video on youtube. Might as well get intimate with her. |

It was $375 in my area last time I checked a few years ago. Buy the service manual and it's about $40 per service. You will save serious cash on the first service! Only very basic tools are required. |

If it's not in warranty, I would suggest just doing it yourself. Oil change, tranny juice change, check/adjust primary chain+cables. That's really it. |

I am positive that there are Harley dealers who can do this right, and charge a fair price and I have just been rather unlucky. Changing the oil and filter will cost you about $20 if you get the oil and filter at my favorite seller: Wal Mart. Their oil filter cost two bucks, and the last time I checked, it was made by the same folks who make the OEM one, Champion. Part number is Super Tech # ST4967. I used Mobil One 15w50 about five bucks a quart at Wally World. Takes about an hour if you have a torx t-27, an oil filter wrench, and an old clorox bottle to keep the used oil in before putting it in your girlfriend's car, like I used to do. And one more thing - don't just stick a screw driver into the oil filter to remove it, unless nobody is looking and you don't mind a bit of a mess. DAHIK. Buy the shop manual and man up. That's a Buell you're riding son: act like a real Buelligan. OK? |

re: Jon...Not sure where you're getting $20 for an oil change since good synthetic oil is over $10/qt and filters run anywhere from $4 to $17, depending upon the brand. As for Wally World...I avoid that place like the plague, unless I'm in the mood to the watch "the people of walmart" and be entertained on a hot summer afternoon. Anyway, bought 4qts of Mobil One for V-Twins and a Purolator filter so I'm going to start with the oil change tomorrow...and (IF) I can find something to hold the bike perfectly vertical I'll take a look into the tranny to check the fluid there and the slop in the primary chain. The Harley Dealership said I shouldn't have any problem running 20W50 in both the crank and tranny. Anyway...The Harley dealership wants about $250 for the preliminary checkup so I'm just going to do it myself...although I would like to get the thing on the data logger sometimes since it has had a Hawk aftermarket muffler added to it and I'm not 100% convinced that is the best thing for it. I do have the stock muffler and may put it back on, after I steel wool it and repaint it flat black with high temp manifold paint. The Hawk is a bit loud for my tastes. Thx everybody! |

You will also want to replace the O-rings on the drain plugs. I picked up a pack of #41 O-rings from the hardware store for a couple of bucks. That's a 25K mile supply! You might get away with reusing them it they aren't damaged, but that's really cheaping out and asking for a leak. |
