I have a few questions for the folks of badweb regarding my new 2003 XB9S. I just picked my bike up from it's initial service and I have noticed a few things. First, my oil filter was replaced with a fram and with the things I have been hearing about them, is this something to worry about? Second, my fan doesn't seem to be running the same. Before the service it seemed to be running a lot, in traffic as well as at speed on the highway (where I had assumed that the airflow would be sufficiant to keep it from running). Now it only comes on after I have turned the bike off. Granted, I haven't gone on a long ride since the service but it normally would have cut on, even just during quick jaunts. One last one. The bottom compression fitting on the oil cooler seems to not seal properly. It turns black and collects dirt but doesn't drip or anything. I know it's American and even my Chevy leaks but it's my first bike and my baby and I just want to know what is normal and what is "character" Thank you. You guys run the best board that I have ever seen! Oh, are there any Buell riders in the RI area, I have the only one I have ever seen here. Thanks again.

I have no opinion on oil filters, only to change them every 3000. Your bike may have been running lean before the service. At the service thet reset your TPS and make sure you air fuel ratio are correct. Lean = hot. It'll run less as the bike breaks in. Just make sure the oil line is tight not over tight, that'll fix that up as long as it's only loose. But most of all Welcome to the board! |

Did you get it serviced at an HD/Buell service center? They may not have had the Buell filter in stock and just used the comparable FRAM unit. I, myself, have never had a problem with any Fram filter... In terms of the oil cooler fitting, are you referring to the compression fitting or the one actually attached to the cooler itself. If the latter, you may find that the black stuff is not oil seep but rubber/road grime. I know it is on mine because I wrapped it and it got dirty on the outside but was clean on the inside with no leaks... Also, if you changed to synthetic, the bike WILL run cooler and the fan WILL come on less...mine did. Chris edited by Barkandbite on July 09, 2004 |

Actually I did switch over to synthetic (I thought that it already was) and it did seem to be running lean but I thought that that had to do with the fuel injection programming. I haven't ridden it enough after the service to feel a power difference. Also, before taking it in I would occasionally get a nice fat backfire through the airbox. This only happened after the engine was hot, when going slow or blipping the throttle quickly, and actually it has happened since getting it back. I had thought that it was a situation caused by it running lean though. Sorry about so many questions. None of these "problems" can keep me from loving my xb9s though. It is by far the best bike I have ever ridden. |

Does anybody know about the drummer? Also, does the race kit void the warranty? Buell said that it depends and the HD dealer said no, but I don't really trust them. |

Wise man to not trust a dealer. Many will tell you what you want to hear & then still screw you. Drummer...search knowledge vault for it. Good pipe, nice power, not real loud. |

It all depends on the dealer. Technically, you're not allowed to run a Race Kit on a street legal bike in the first place. |

This is my experience with FRAM oil filters. At my first track day, one of the instructors' bikes used a FRAM. His filter exploded/split while he was riding the bike. The rider escaped unharmed, his bike wound up in a few big pieces. He claimed that this was not the first time a FRAM had done this to him. I am not discouraging anybody from FRAM, just my opinion. I have used their filters in my pickups and cards for a long time with out issue. As for the fan not coming on as much, what oil did they switch to? When I went to synthetic, my fan came on less. |

well moe I was wondering i I was the only Buell in RI but now I know I 'm not. Precision HD put a fram on? Doesn't sit to well that a dealership is putting on aftermarket parts. Not that fram is a bad filter its just not the norm. |

just tighten the bottom fitting on the oil cooler just a tad. It seeps VERY slowly and then collects spent rubber and road grime. I tightened mine a little and it nearly solved the problem. Now I wipe tham about every month. Before it was every week or more. |
