FYI to those interested. After a few miles on a hot, recently paved road (with pebbles) my XB popped the red check engine light. It was the fan that shorted out and kept blowing the fuse. Originally I thought about a short in the wiring - nope - just a peice of tar covered gravel finding it's way into the fan assembly & blocking the rotation. I suppose this is a highly improbable type problem however if this happens to you - take a look at the fan before digging thru the electronics & wiring. Will save time and hassle. Ride safe. |

Good catch. The fuse did its job. Bet that wasn't obvious. |

Heh...man, that gravel must have had fun trying to get up in there...almost like the magic bullet from JFK. |

Yeah - knowing it a Buell I started my deduction with the vibration causing a wire to get worn and shorting somewhere on a ground...(as with the front horn wire before). Only the wiring for the fan is a real bit** to get to, I was 400 miles from the local dealer, it was 90 degrees and I was on my way to Italy, and I don't speak Italian! Oh, and has anyone tried to actually work on the XB with the tools in that little pouch? 2 days later I figured it out - about the same time I found a shop with one of those tiny 10A fuses... My buddy on his Sportster was giving it to me for not riding a good, old reliable HD on top of everything! |

I hate those tar and gravel roads!!! I avoid them if possible but when impossible, I go real slow. I always check the bike for stray rocks after riding on one of those roads. I've found a tar covered pebble up by my fan twice already. I actually wondered if any pebbles had hit the fan. I also don't like how pebbles collect on the little stub fender over the rear wheel and get lodged in between it and the swingarm. |

984cc, I agree on the rear fender deal. I believe I'm going to take it off and cut a slot in it so there is some clearance between the two. Use my Dremel, etc.........Odie |

The fix for that was a little black RTV spread across the gap. Nearly invisible and if it is seen it looks factory. |

I was thinking black silicone for a fix too. |

It works great and I wish I had thought of it. Doh! Someone else on Badweb deserves the credit tho. Lots of DG out here and it packed the fender gap terrible until I siliconed it. |
