Hey guys,

Just dropped the bike off at Dallas HD and initial diagnosis without any real inspection of the bike is that it will cost about 3 grand to repair damages to the engine if it's a rod or anything internal. The mechanic says there's no way it's anything minor just from listening to it. I was told the reason for the expense is because they cannot get a hold of many parts for XB engines any longer.

I am not mechanically inclined enough to do engine repair, but if there's anyone in the DFW that can help me out with a cheaper alternative I have a few bucks and a lot of beer for your time and effort as I feel I will have to buy the parts on ebay or some place and try and fix it myself.

Any suggestion are appreciated. By the way I opened the bike up and found dirt dobbler nests inside of the intake and surrounding the fuel hoses. Makes me wonder if only I had ridden her more and not left it parked for years.

Suggestion would be to find an engine from a wreck and buy it. Or buy a bunch of tools and dig into it. Look at it this way, the engine is gone, how much worse can you make it?

You can get crank shaft with rods used for around $100, cylinders and pistons for $750, full gasket kit for $144. Toss in some misc. bearings and a bunch of hard work and you might be running again. If it needs valves then you are probably in for about another $300.

Unfortunately, that's probably a realistic price if you're talking about rods, etc., just for labour.

That is why so many bike owners become mechanically inclined.

However, these bikes are simple. There are some walk-throughs on other threads. The manual is good.

Thanks guys I do own a manual but only have used it for cosmetic and other minor repairs. I guess I can try and see what happens. What does a used engine go for typically?

$1000 if you are lucky, $2000 if you are not.

What you should probably look for is a complete wreck for about $2000, use the engine and any other parts that you want, part out the rest to offset the cost. After getting the bill for the head work and adding everything up I kind of wish I had done this. If you search back a couple months there was an XB9 for sale in the NY/NJ area for about $2000 with a hole in the frame, had lots of other good parts and was said to run fine, might be worth the $500 or so to ship it to you. There is also a dismantler in the Texas area so you might look for them and see what you can get an engine for from one of their recent purchases.

Again I would dive in and see what I could accomplish because you really have little to lose right now. And when you have so little to lose you may have a lot of knowledge to be gained.

There's a few of them on ebay right now for anywhere from $1200 to $2225. I don't recall ever seeing too many of them in the classifieds here.

Might be worth the shipping and part out the other stuff that you don't want if he still has it.

If I was closer I would offer to go listen to it run, but it's 4-5 hours away, should be a couple people closer.
