ok so I wrote a few days ago about my electrical nightmare that I still can't seem to solve. But now I have an even worse problem I broke an exhaust strap and exsaust stud. My question comes in here. Is there a way for me to replace a front stud with out rotating the engine? If not what all does rotating the engine involve? I am really getting frustrated at the moment. |

You should be able to get on the front studs without rotating the engine. |

Yes it is possible without rotating ,but do not rush with such things! |

The exhaust straps are stainless straps available from marine suppliers. Here is a discussion on this board from a few years ago. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/disc us.cgi?pg=prev&topic=32777&page=370456 |

and today the story gets worse... I went to take the nut off of the "good" stud and it seems that that one has been broke and some one just screwed the little pice of stud back into it so now I am going to have to replace both of them on the front. I am thinking I may have to rotate the engine so I can get to the ones to drop my headers since I cant get the drill at the right angle with the headers on besides I have a jims tool that would make like life easier with the headers off unless someone knows how to drop the headers with out rotating the engine. |

Go ahead and rotate, it's simple to do, just take your time. It'll be worth it in the end. You'll also be able to clean it up real nice. Wish I could help with the electrical, but I know next to nothing when it comes to tracking down gremlins. |

I did a rotate once, and it only takes a couple hours to get everything right where you need it. It is also possible to remove the header without rotating the motor. I found that on buellxb. Rotate the motor, or remove the rear shock and fan???????????? |

yea I found the buellxb write up on the shock and fan method so that is what I am going to do tomorrow...On a positive note I am riding my old m2 right now. |

There's a good engine rotation walk-through on buellxb in diy section. It's for what you are trying to do. It's not complete for doing cylinder work but it gets you most of the way there. (Also, for what you're doing you won't have to remove the whole V-frame or disconnect the oil lines. Remove the clutch cable clamps, unbolt the top, loosen the bottom, let it hang there, you'll see what I mean.) |

I did see what you mean...and it is just hanging just enough for me to get the header to clear and i did not need to get the header all the way off the bike just to wear it would drop out of the way for me to work. I have one stud out and then it started getting dark so I will have to pick up tomorrow...besides I forgot to buy gaskets and you have to remove them to put that jims tool on there and I realized I bought the wrong tap so I have to take that back and get the right one also. But I am almost there. Tomorrow I should be back on the road...Just sucks cause I can't go anywere tonight cause I have no bike. |

also does any one know if the gaskets are the same as the ones on a sportster? cause that would sure make life easier if they are. |

grrr the issues just keep stacking up for my bike. I just broke a tap inside of one of my holes so looks like not I am going to have to run a heli coil in that one or something. |

yes I did though some of the things I learned I did not want to...like what it takes to get a broken tap out of a hole...or the fact that this costed me almost $150 but not in parts...the actual parts for this was probably only $30 if not less total. Most of it was new tools because my fake dremel went out so I bought a real one, did not have a swivel rachet bit, and some other stuff. But I have a bunch of shiny new tools and the people a sears all know me by name now. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/406 2/643810.html?1311535684 |

"Shiny"s are good. Rather buy tools than pay somebody else's hourly rate. My last issue took about the same, $150, in tools but the shop would have charged at least $3000, and that would have been a fair price. They would have taken a week at least, I took about a week. I'm ahead of the game. So are you. |
