my XB9R is running very hot...this is my first buell so i dont know a whole lot about them. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to make it run cooler? | ||

How do you know it's running hot? Has it gone into skip mode? (running on one cylinder) These are air-cooled engines, set in a very tight space. You can swap to full synthetic oil, and get one of these. Might help some. But these are hot bikes in the Summer. | ||

Ride faster the cool air will make you feel better. As Glitch said though these bikes are air cooled and run "hot". Your probably feeling it on the seat real bad. | ||

Only real suggestion is to ride faster and stay out of traffic. Glitch is right. The bike has its own limiters so you will know. Ignore any bafflegab comments about "running lean" which will show up soon. | ||

lol, you're riding an air cooled bike in 100+ degree midwest heat....of course it's running hot!  haha, not being a jerk, but they run hot, especially when the air is hot. | ||

Use cooler air to cool your bike. I suggest riding north until the temperature gets better. | ||

It's a 100°F here in Ontario, Canada, so you've got a lot further north to go. | ||

awesome thanks every one,this is my first Buell. From what everyone is saying it is probably alright, i'm just used to riding bikes that run much cooler. Is there a good engine temp gauge that can used on a XB9R? Also the previous owner had the pipes wrapped, is this a good idea or should I remove the wraps? Kansas is very hot and humid this time of year, so i want it to run as cool at possible. Sometimes when i start the bike after it has gotten hot the engine light kicks on(warning light that looks like the V-twin) whats the deal with that does anyone know? Thanks! Brian | ||

If it gets too hot it will go in "Skip Spark" mode.You will notice it running with a "miss".If you have not noticed this it is probably normal.Pipe wrap helps a little with the heat.I made a blanket out of "under hood insulation"that fit under my seat to direct the hot air down around the rear shock.A sheepskin on the seat helps too. | ||

The right side air scoop will help alot. Also i believe spec ops sells heat shields fore your seat which will help with the hot air the XBs conveniently blow at your crotch. As for how the heat shield or mat as the case may be works I have no idea as i don't have one. Either way unless something is seriously wrong with the engine. these bikes like any other air-cooled tend to run hot. The funny part is that i pray for that hot air in the late fall at night and yet it all seems to have gone to the quick board....  | ||

archangel- The light will kick on for a few moments after i have started the bike and until i leave first usually, but it does not always do that. just randomly... | ||

Key on, run on, not started yet, CEL is on for about 4 seconds. This is normal If CEL is on after start for about 8 seconds, indicates a trouble code in the history. That might help you in figuring this out. | ||

And if you think it may be hot, you might consider changing the head temp. sensor. | ||

How does changing a sensor change the temperature? The heat sensor measures the temperature, it doesn't control it (other than turning on the fan or skip cycle). It's not "if you think", it's "if you know" the sensor is bad change it. In other words, until if you have another actual heat measurement, or have tested the sensor, you have no reason to address the sensor. Your next step should be checking that historic trouble code. | ||

Also does anyone know how many feet of exhaust wrap i would need to wrap the pipes on my XB9R? I plan on using 2" wrap. i dont liked wrapped pipes, but they were previously wrapped and the pipes look rough now... (Message edited by scheith on July 20, 2011) |
