Motoring along at 70-80 mph (4K rpm for 50 miles) and 9s started to cough and sputter. No engine warning lights,,,pull in clutch and bike died. Found "N" and coasted to shoulder of road. Acted like It ran out of gas. Thumb the starter and bike started rode back toward town to gas station. Bike still running shity. Coughing, sputtering and almost backfiring. It died 2 more times but restarted. I was not out of gas but topped it off with BP premium. Looked things over and checked oil. Cooling fan was doing its job. All ok. Made some calls (20 min.)to line up help and decided to head back home. Rode 5o mph and bike seemed to run fine. Got up next day and rode 60 miles at 60 mph no problems. Any ideas what caused the bike to sputter/caugh and die?

I had a 9r that at 4k rpm would act similar. After 10 miles at steady 4k, roll the throttle and it would start to sputter as you describe and even occasionally die. It would start right back up and run fine through the gears until I held it steady at 4k again and rolled the throttle. Ended up having the Alt. and fuel pump replaced. Ran perfect after that. The check engine light would sometimes come on...but not always.
