Guys, I had an earlier thread about inspecting my belt and finding some cracking at the teeth. You guys convinced me it was normal and nothing to worry about but scolded me for bending it backwards... http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/635228.html?1306896048 Anyway, Along with some other parts, I order a new belt from American Sport Bike as a backup. It came shipped bent backwards WAY farther than I got scolded for, probably 4-5 times farther. Here's a picture of it as it came, on top of the box it came in.
Do I need to be worried about this new belt? I mean, it has to bend backwards over the tensioner, right? I know over the tensioner isn't much, but how much before it affects the belt? Is this belt going to fail early? |

We was just bustin' your chops, Givin' you a hard time. The belt gets bent backwards by the idler. A little bending wont hurt it. The real damage gets done when it is put on wrong under tension. It's not good to handle it rough. Get out and ride. I have a dry sense of humor. |

twisting them is whats bad for them. its like a rubber band.. as long as they are straight they can take a lot. At an angle (not aligned which doesnt aply with us since there is no belt adjustment) not so good. |

Actually you should not bend the older belts backward- the new ones can handle it much better...they are very different belts nowadays. |

I say it's more luck than anything. I've pulled, yanked and twisted my belt and it lasted 27K before something else broke and took it out. |

The back bend on all Buells violates those instructions, we would need an 8 inch pulley on the bottom of the path to satisfy that document, 10 inch on the 04+ models. I have a feeling there is more to this than that document. |

Hey, just putting it out there. FWIW, i just installed a new belt on a FXR, Drag Specialties branded, built by Goodyear. Nearly identical warnings, and it shipped in a flat box, no inner loop. Every service manual at hand states either 3" or 5" minimum diameter on a reverse bend. I see nothing on the Buell that violates that rule. You all can do as you please. |

section 6.6 of the manual. Back bend can't be less than 10". Big whoop. |

Interesting. Section 6.6 of my manual is Case Disassembly For Transmission Removal. Bigger whoop. |

Case disassembly is 6.8 in mine, 2005 edition. You can probably figure it out from there. Ride it. |
