I just recently switched from a gsxr to a xb12ss. Over all I like the bike. The best well rounded bike I've ever owned. However, when it comes to exhaust it seems to be a pain. On my 02 gsxr I just bolted on a slip on and went. Do you really have to change or flash the ecm after doing exhuast. If it has an o2 sensor shouldn't it be able to relearn and compensate for the new leaner mixture How is special ops able to retain the interactive valve? Why are they the only ones? |

You will definitely need to tune it or at least load up a race map. It does have an O2 sensor and it does compensate a little, but a new exhaust is too far out of the range of the sock ECM. I just put a slip on Jardine exhaust on mine with the QMI and I still need to tune my ECM because it has a lot of decel popping and is a bit weak in the mid range power. I am going to purchase an ECM cable so I can load a race map with ECMspy (and tune it when I learn how). I own an XB9SX so I can't speak for the valve in the 12's exhaust. |

you don't have to get a reflash or a race ecm, i have had these on for a while now and the bike is fine true the bike will probably run better with more power if you change the ecm but i imagine most people would have advised you fit a power commander when you swapped your gsxr exhaust http://www.aph-performance-engineering.com/ |

You shouldn't need a tune with just exhaust. Usually a tune is necessary with intake mods which allow more air in. Exhaust isn't going to allow more air in ... |

the muffler valve is just that. a valve in teh muffler. special ops isn't the only one able to retain the interactive muffler valve. anyone that uses the stock 12 muffler could retain it. the 9 muffler doesn't have it, and usually is prefered for cutting up and re-welding a tune would not be 'required' after replacing hte muffler, but it would be a good idea and is worth it IMHO (like $35 for the cable and software if you go thru e-bay) or someone local can hook you up. it takes like 5 minutes. maybe 10 if you are unfamilair with the ECMspy program it'll smooth out the fueling and keep things stoich, instead of rich or lean. running rich is not great. it contributes to fouled spark plugs, and poor fuel economy. running lean is bad. it is not good for the motor to run like that. usually makes it run too hot.
