Ok, I need some help. Bike 2003 XB9R has a grand total of 2914 miles. Was riding the XB9R and everything was fine. Turned off the bike and came out to start it again and no speedo. I took out the speedo sensor and it was not very dirty. Cleaned it and put it back in and still nothing. I am assuming that it must of fried. So can anyone tell me the part number for the newer ones and how much they cost or any tricks to bring it back to life?

Mine just went, too!
There are two obvious causes, the sensor or the speedo itself. If the needle still sweeps when the ignition is switched on then its probably the sensor. There is a repair kit YO199.K available for that, which according to UKBEG's Paul Ambruster:
' fits 1999-2002 X1 S3 2001-2002 M2 2003 XB9R

Basicaly in the kit you get a new gearbox sensor as HD persume the only reason you require their kit is you old sensor is goosed and a load of connections, as far as I know the new sensor is the same as the old one
as I could not get this kit before I went to the IOM. Black Bear HD sent me a new sensor and the wiring kit to follow. On the X1 the rewire takes its power from the TPS which is a more controlled voltage. If any one wants a copy of the wiring diagrams Email me at paul.armbruster@ntlworld.com as it could save you money as the complete kit works out at £83.00'
I'm still riding Speedoless (That's a character from 'Lord of the Rings) until I can get to the dealer, as I'm still under warranty.

Wanna hear something kinda ironic? I have a 2003 xb9s also and the other day on the way home from work I looked down at the spedo & nothing. The ironic part is that when I stopped and switched from clock to odom., turns out it quit right at 2003 miles. Pretty wierd huh...

The sensor was not the problem per se, the problem was voltage spikes blowing the poor thing up. The updated part has a regulated 5v supply.

The voltage spike sounds accurate to me. Both times mine went out on the XB9R, it was right after bouncing off the rev limiter. I am assuming here that likely had something to do with it. My third one (not the updated part) has lasted quite a while. When it goes, I guess I'll upgrade.

We have "before and after" pictures from an oscilliscope that shows the problem (and it's solution) clearly.

Those shots were taken with a (very simple) regulator I built, but the Buell part should do the exact same thing.

Mine died at approx 2500 as well. Currently at 6000+ with no problems.

mine died at 4500. but i was still under warranty. got it replaced and everything is fine now. they told me it was a bad censor.

My instrument guage cluster looks as if it has 3 lines melting from the inside. No malfunctions from the gauge, though. The dealer told me that it looks as if it is parked in the sun. Can't argue with him there.

I let another XBer borrow my gauge to get his registered because my gauge had more miles. I noticed that his guage package did the same thing on my bike by putting the same melting line on his. It is about 12:00 o'clock position between the tach and the speedometer.
Anyone else had this problem?
