Ive got an '03 buell apart right now, figure I might as well do a pump while the frame is off. '03s had the pump im told, I want to go to the newer 06ish style but would the 2010 one work also? Any info regarding pump upgrades?

Not sure when pumps were changes and which years but they all fit and operate.

All use the same pressure regulator so you're not going to have to change mapping.

Not sure what the pump assembly costs - the weird thing is that the ACTUAL pump is not sold separately, you can get every other nickel-and-dime part of the assembly EXCEPT the pump itself (go figure) - this apparently is true even with the Harleys.

My 03 pump took a dump (kinda poetic) and I just replaced it with an XBRR pump (higher pressure regulator for the racing application) bought from E B Racing.

They changed the connector on the fuel pumps in 08, so your best bet is an 07 fuel pump.

thats not a pump though? Doesnt change the way fuel is picked up. Im told the 03's run really lean. Thats just a regulator.

IIRC, Erik told me that 2010 fuel pumps use PWM under ECM control to control pressure instead of the spring/diaphragm type design used on earlier XBs. So you can't use the 2010 pump on the earlier models. And there is a connector change on the 2008 pumps, but if you change it to the other style, a 2008 pump will work in an earlier model. Avoid 2003/early 2004 pumps, they're prone to cavitation.

I spent an insane amount of money repairing that connector. Two different gages of wire.Almost done.Got terminals for the PACKARD connector from Electrical Terminal Service in MI. I'll bet a whole damn pump assemblie is a lot less than $600.

Just hope you can find a pump. We had a customer here last year with bike running poorly--diagnosed as pump not puttting out enough pressure. Could not find a pump in US-----Erik Buell Racing came to the rescue and sent us an XBRR pump, just had to swap regulators as it had the high pressure one.

Reckon I best look out in the barn for one.
Mine's getting louder, and now that I know the 03s are prone to problems, it'll go out.

Jim, that regulator you had to swap, what'd you swap it with?

Hey jim, you are the one who told me the'03 pumps were crap when you tuned my bike. I have my frame off right now and figure it would be a good time to do something about it. Using the high pressure regulator prob isnt good for my bolt on bike? I did just put a 51mm throttle body on it. Im going to have to come up and have you run it on the dyno a few more times once its running.

Also, Isnt it just a Walbro pump? I have a racetronix pump laying around here. I wonder if I can use that. But the pick ups still wouldnt be that good

If you are expecting a huge increase in power, then the XBRR pump with higher pressure would be a good idea. Higher volume injectors might also be required to get a seriously upgrade machine working properly.

For what it's worth, the actual pump (not the entire assembly) looks just like the in-tank fuel pump on my 1993 Volvo 940 turbo wagon. Even if that's not the same pump, I'll bet the Buell pump can be cross-referenced to some standard off-the-shelf auto fuel pump.

There are LOADS of pumps for sale on Ebay... but there just is no way to get a good cross-reference.

Still sux that you can buy every nickel and dime part on the pump assembly EXCEPT the pump.

Here's a look at the Ebay search results:

Ebay link

My problem is just not knowing IF this is truly a replacement. There are like a dozen similar advertised if you search "XB FUEL PUMP"

I bet it is a Ford or off the same Japanese bike that the mirrors came from. Remember that his whole idea was to use ready built assemblies to save on costs and to have instant DOT. Fuse and relay boxes are a Ford part, injectors are ford, connectors are ford. There was a Ford something very close by so a lot of the stuff was probably in stock at the distributors.

Now finding that Ford cross reference is going to be the hard part, but I bet is was on something small like a Focus or whatever the other small machine was at the time of design.

What would be really nice is if E B R would take some time to list a cross reference since parts are indeed getting difficult to get from Harley, probably breaks some kind of contract.

Well if the pump is in fact the same as one used in a newer car of whatever the brand its not likely to be available as a pump only at the auto parts store. I say this because most modern automobiles use a modular type pump which is sold as a non serviceable unit. This is usually going to be the case not always but keep it in mind if searching for a cross-reference.

looks something like this
but you have to compare the numbers between them!

Or maybe its between one of these!?

Like i said eariler, its just a walbro pump. Atleast in my '03. We use them in race cars all the time.

http://69.16.165.8/availableproducts.aspx

http://www.racetronix.biz/items.asp?Cc=FP%2D01&iTpStatus=0&Tp=&Bc=

I have a racetronix pump here for a GM car, looks just like the one in the buell. I was wondering if these "newer style pumps" acctually use different pumps or just configured differently with different pick ups. I can order all the pick ups and hoses from harley, use this pump I have here and be better off or no... only thing holding me back from getting my bike put back together.

Here's the Volvo in-tank pump I referenced earlier. It's an "in-tank" pump for a 940 turbo. It's available as just the bare pump:

$55 from these guys:

http://www.fcpgroton.com/product-exec/product_id/1 6788/nm/Volvo_940_Turbo_In_Tank_Fuel_Pump_1991_199 4_Aftermarket_/category_id/149

If someone lives nearby (or near a Volvo dealer) you could cross-check your pump that way.

For all the guys who want to know..

My 06 pump just got here, EXACT same fuel pump as the '03, same part number which crosses to a Walbro 255L pump.

Main difference is the regulator assembly, and what looks like a different pick up.

4500270 is the part number for the walbro pump

I bet you can order the regulator and pick up setup and make your '03 pump better then it was.

Also the '03 Pump in the picture has 16k miles on it, the '06 pump only had 9k miles on it and the pickup sock was wasted. Ripped and torn and the inline filter was very dirty. Looks like a worse location for the sock on the newer design. Im going to get an extra sock from Al at American Sport Bike while I can as I see it wearing a hole in it again easily by the way it mounts.

Since you crossed it to a common pump, is there a common filter sock to put over the end?

Havent gone that far yet, I was going to post the part numbers for the BUELL parts, I ordered some extra like i said for future use. It would be good to service the pump every 10k miles based on what I found in there with only 9k miles. Although my 16k mile '03 pump was fine.

$20 insurance from American Sport Bike, links below.

Although im sure you can find parts from walbro. Their website is just really bad to navigate and i cant get their products page to load. A simple call, if needed and im sure they can get you what you need.

I found some information on the Buellxb.com that mentioned the replacement 03-07 fuel pumps were: "fuel pump for a 2003 Mustang V6, part number E2366 at Autozone XB fuel pumps are made by Walbro and are model #521"

That part number didn't turn out too well for me. The '04 pump has a brass nipple, 3 stacked o-rings, and a bushing as it enters the fuel pressure housing. The E2366 part is a straight plastic tube, and no way to make it seal. I've tried using the o-rings and the bushing, but no dice there. Also the strainer sock has a placement issue. Spread the word, this pump is not a direct replacement. Later in the thread linked above, a different part number is listed (along with the same problem I ran into). Learn from my mistake....

Let me clarify something there.... the airtex part #E2366 will NOT work. I have a walbro 521 on the way, and will let you know what I find.

The #521 will work for the 2004 model year.
