hey guys, i did a header wrap and put everything back together and got the exhaust back from odie. i was installing the pipe when i noticed that it didnt line up so i looked around and saw that the header was sticking out too far. i didnt mount it evenly!! so a few questions, first one, i've heard either or but i got the evo exhaust gaskets and the screamin eagle ones, which one works better? im guessing the evo ones but they are a pain to go in. and Secondly, what is the best way to torque the header on to make sure it lines up where it is suppose to? I.E. can i torque it down evenly and then put exhaust on without stressin the studs or is it better to fit the muffler on before nuts are tight and tighten them afterwards?? that header not lining up pissed me off when i realized what happened!! |

First, welcome! Second. I have no idea which gasket is better. How could it not line up properly and be able to get the flange to the head and put the nuts on the studs? Or am I reading this wrong. Pics? |

i already have it removed. thought it was set in straight then torqued all the nuts even. after looking into it, on the front cylinder, the top nut was tightened with 5? threads exposed, the bottom nut has 0-1 thread exposed, the flange plate was crooked, not sure about the rear one. Im sure it was just a one time thing. when i loosened them, i gave it a bump and it popped down probably where it should be. but gaskets were messed up so pulled it all off. once i get the new gaskets really cold, ill assemble it back together but just wanted to know if its ok to mount the header all the way on first OR if everything should be left loose and fit the muffler on to keep it all straight. (honestly, not sure how it ended up crooked like that, the flange was crooked(damn lack of space sucks), just want to make sure i don't tighten it all up and install the muffler, and if its tweaked a little, don't wanna break a stud!!) |

OK. I'm not sure if you have a service manual or not. I think the header gets installed completely, then the muffler gets put on after that. The muffler gets tightened to it's mounts before the connection at the header is secured. I have an 05 Bolt too, and have never had the header off, but have had the can off numerous times. I'll check my service manual tomorrow morning. It's at work, so there is nothing I can do right now. |

That's how I do it, if you tighten the header to muffler clamp and then tighten the muffler to engine bands, you will certainly put some odd pressures on the header. |

I haven't done headers yet on mine, how bad is it? Do you really have to lower the engine? I have a nice heat wrapped set in the rafters just waiting for a free night to put 'em on... |

sorry, no pics. i got you though. yes the engine has to be rotated down to get to everything and its better to pull header off to wrap it, engine rotations are a breeze, i dont even disconnect anything like it says, just loosen bolts, clutch cable and the coil, that all then lower!. Thats what ill end up doing, it looks like it will be tight but should have enough room to fit muffler underneath and then tighten everything. I was thinkin the same thing, stress the stud and then ooohh Noo!! i do the download when i really need it but makes my laptop sooo sloow then have to restart to erase the download!! |

oh sorry, i forgot to ask one more thing. I've also read mixed opinions on this too. first, how often do you all usually retorque the header nuts? secondly, not a fan of, but whats your opinions on double nutting the header, loctite, or putting a band of safety wire around the stud after nut to make sure it doesn't loosen up? |

Instead of all that work, I would probably get a set of the split lock nuts designed for exhaust studs. These are the ones that are all metal and have a slit cut into them and that slit is pushed a little bit away when you screw the nut on which keeps it locked. Somewhere there was a post with a link to the correct size |

you talkin about the ones with a couple slits cut into it parallel with the stud (kind of looks like a castle nut i guess) or the ones that have a slit around the nut. damn, kind of hard to explain!! just don't want my damn exhaust to come loose and break studs and stuff!! |
