Hey, I've noticed a small oil leak. Noticed a bit of oil on my muffler. I took the lower cowl off and I'm guessing it's one of the oil lines near the oil filter as the filter had a bit of oil on it also. I'm fixin to go for a test ride (had to fix a flat also) and was going to see if I could pin point the leak. If it's one of the lines, what's better some kind of thread sealant or some teflon thread tape??? Oh, another quick question: the wire that goes to the Oil Pressure switch with the small elbow, it just pulls off doesn't it??? I was going to put a bit of tape or shrink wrap on it as the wire isn't real protected as it comes off the switch... Thanks,Kevin |

Oh, I glanced in the service manual but didn't see the torque for the lines, anybody know what they are off hand??? Thanks again, Kevin |

Those lines are compression fittings and as such do not want any sealant on them, the fitting into the motor can use some, but not for the actual hose ends, and the torque is minimal, just enough to snug up.Hope that helps! |

Yea, thanks... I'm just going to leave the cowl off for a few days and try to 'chase' that leak... I'll make sure the fittings are snug and leave it at that... Thanks again... Kevin |

I had a leak when I first started changing the filter. Be sure you fill it half full when chaning and only lightly hand tighten. The gasket is very easily ruined. Took me 3 ties to get it right. Good luck.

Thanks Bruce, that's one other thing I was going to look at and maybe change. I use the Mobil 1 filter but I usually tighten them 1 turn after it makes contact. I did have trouble loosening the last filter I took off about 7 or 8 hundred miles ago. So that was another thing I was suspicious of. Actually I'm hoping that is it because I haven't had a bit of trouble out of my bike and that would be something I did myself... Kevin |

I can't remember exactly (Manual not in front of me) but the manual says less than one turn after it touches. I'll read and post tomorrow what the good book says about the filter. I promise... |

Is that common? Having a leak with an oil filter??? Not trying to be smart but I've never had that problem before... Thanks again, Kevin |

Don't know, he's just trying to find the leak. He said he twisted it one full turn past touching and thought I could help him out... The service manual states 1/2 to 3/4 turn after touching...Just looked. |

"Is that common? Having a leak with an oil filter??? Not trying to be smart but I've never had that problem before" Very easy to do if you install incorrectly.

Well, I pulled off the oil filter yesterday and it left the rubber gasket on the bike.I got to thinking that when I put it on I thought I had it a bit tight and loosened it up about a 1/4 turn, maybe I wrinkled the seal... Cool, maybe I found the problem, so I put another filter on and hand tightened it to about 1/2 turn...Checked the oil line fittings and they seemed tight... Rode it to work and back today and on the way home, it leaked oil again... Hmmm From the looks of it, it's either coming out of the filter, the oil line fitting right by the filter or the oil sending unit... I cleaned it up real good so maybe I can get a better clue on where it's coming from... Used that S100 stuff, first time. Seemed to clean the grime off the engine real good... Thanks for all yalls help... SHhhhhhhhhh, I'm hunting oil leaks........ Kevin |

Kevin, Did you remember to fill the filter one-half full before installing it? I made that mistake also before my owner's manual arrived.

Yea, I put a bit of oil in the filter... Rode it for a bit last evening to the parts house and noticed a bit of oil when I got there. From where the oil was pretty much took the filter out of the suspect list. Either the line or the pressure switch. I need to wipe it back down and go for a ride tomorrow evening, maybe I can pinpoint it for sure. Talked to a guy out at work today who was a mechanic a few years ago,he mentioned that oil pressure switches used to leak fairly regularly... Hmmmmm Kevin |

Did you remember to smear some oil on the gasket to help it spin and not tear??? |

Yep, always put a bit of oil on it to lube it... I've taken the filter out of the suspects list. Took out the oil sending unit and put in back in with a bit of sealant, let it dry a couple of days and it still leaked last evening when I ran it... Been raining almost every day the last week around here...I'm taking the line and fitting off (that's right by the oil sending unit) and going to put it back together with a bit of sealant... Got the line lose but didn't have a 9/16 hydraulic wrench to take the 90degree fitting off... If that's not it, it's off to the shop... Kevin rain rain go AWAY... |

Well, I had to take both lines loose (the lines from the oil cooler, but at the other end with the compression fittings) to take the 90degree fitting off... Had to take the oil sending unit off also but got both the fitting and oil sending unit back on with a bit of thread sealant. Tried it out this evening, leak is a lot worse and it's coming from both compression fittings??? Anybody got any tips before I take it to the shop??? Kevin |

Thanks Donnie, I'm afraid to tighten it too much and I'm not having much luck so I'm thinking about taking it up to the local hd shop and let them take care of it... That's what warrantys are for... I was hoping to take it out of town next week for a few days but it doesn't look good... Guess I better wash the car and get it ready... Thanks to all, Kevin |
