So the other day I was riding through town and my bike cut off. Its like someone flipped the kill switch. I replaced all the fuses but did not replace the relays simply because I did not have any. I also replaced the battery today. Now I've got power again, but my fuel injectors will not engage. So now the bike just turns over when I try and start it. Any helpful advise ? |

Turn the key on, you get both head and tail lights, and the gauges sweep? Flip the kill switch on, do you hear the fuel pump kick in and the check engine light comes on for a few seconds? |

When I turn the key switch on, the fuel injectors do not engage. I do not hear the fuel pump or anything. My headlights, taillight, and speedo&tach do work and the needles do sweep. When I attempt to start the bike all it will do is turn over, but not crank. ????? |

What about the engine light? If the engine light comes on, it might be a fuel pump issue, if the engine light does not come on, it may be ECM related. |

I just went out and turned the switch on and the engine light did not come on even after a minute or two. I tried connecting ECMspy to it when the bike was completely dead. The only thing that would work at that time was the taillight and the tack&speedo needles would sweep. For some reason it was not able to conact to the ECMspy then. I could give that another go and see if it connects now with full power. |

The check engine light that comes on is the ECM booting up (which tells the fuel pump to turn on), so being that yours does not light up the ECM probably is not working. The ECM probably has a loose connection, try wiggling the connectors on it and see if comes back to life. If possible, find someone in your area with a 03-05 XB9 and see if you can swap ECMs. |

I just checked the power to the fuel pump and it is in fact getting power. But it will not turn on when I turn the key switch on. I also checked the power to the kill switch and it is fine as well. Any ideas ? |

When I change to the battery do I need to reset the ECM settings or does it do it automatically ? Or is that a stupid question ? |

You don't need to do anything to the ECM for a battery change. |

alright, so the ECM will not connect to ECMspy. And the engine light does not come on when I turn the ignition on. Bad ECM ? |

All it means for sure is the ECM is not turning on, could be a damaged ECM, but it could also be a broken wire in the harness. Borrowing an ECM off another 03-05 XB9 will help you determine which it is, but in the mean time I'd carefully inspect the wiring harness and do a wiggle test to see if anything responds. |

Are damaged ECMs a common problem with buells? |

Not really, but the heat and vibrations of the bike can take its toll and cause damage to them over time. The Ulys were more prone to it as the put the ECM directly under the rider, so if you are on the portly side the seat will rest on the ECM and damage the connector. |

I had an '03 XB9S that had a bad ECM after 7,000 miles. I didn't have a similar issue but it did fail. I don't want to add to any confusion. I'm just trying to add some info for you. |

Looks like someone is selling an '03 stock ECM in the classifieds for $65 bucks. You may want to check it out. |

Alright so here it goes. I just put my ECM on my buddies XB9 and it worked properly. I'm still in a bind here. My engine light still will not come on and my fuel pump will not engage when I turn the key switch on. HELP PLEASE |

Did you do a complete swap? Did you get the same results with his ECM on your bike? |

No all I did was test mine to his bike. I figured if it worked on his there would not be any need to try his with mine. |

Been without my '03 XB9 for a while now so please bear with me... did you check the kickstand safety-switch? |

Not really. Its still sealed in the rubber tape stuff. I haven't messed with it too much. Should I ? |

The more I think about the kickstand safety-switch the less I think it's likely to be your problem. It's probably best not to mess with it. If you were saying the bike starts but as soon as you toe the shifter out of neutral into a gear AND release the clutch lever it dies, then I'd check it. If that switch went "bad" while you were riding down the road though, it would die just like you described but if you pulled over and put it in neutral, I believe it would fire right back up... and then promptly cut-out as soon as you put it in gear and released the clutch. Since it cranks but won't start, I think I'd head over to your friend's place again and try swapping some relays. Sorry I can't be of more help. |

Oddalloy- thanks man I appreciate your advise. I will try his relays as soon as possible. Yea, when I switch the bike on, the engine light does not come on like it is supposed to. And the fuel pump also does not engage, no sound, no nothing. Like I said, the bike with try to start, but acts as if its not getting fuel. That's what makes me think "maybe" its the fuel pump. But I will deff swap the relays out and try that. |

With no 'check engine light' coming on, the ECU is not booting up. Which means: 1. There is no electrical power getting from the battery to the ECU. A bad relay would be my first choice, but you also have the possibility of a broken wire, bad/poor connector, bad bank angle sensor, ign switch problem, ect, ect. 2. Electrical power cannot 'get out' of the ECU because of a bad ground. On my X-1, the ECU grounds through the neutral switch, the sidestand switch, or the clutch switch. The service manual is your friend. Since your ECU works in another bike, I would discount that as the problem. My first choice would still be the relay, which may just have corrosion on its blades. Hope this helps, please let us know how it goes.... |

I was stranded in Monterey at motel during the Moto GP because of a relay problem and missed Saturday racing. The fuel pump will not pump if its relay is bad. You can switch the two relays to trouble shoot. But make very sure the ignition switch is off when you switch them...take the key out of the ignition. I always carry a spare now. Don't go to a HD shop to buy one if you need it they dktafahitg about relays. A relay is a relay and you can get one at a auto parts store. |
