I still have the 43mm forks with AK20 cartridges (helluva difference in handling, trail-braking confidence) and Penske 3-way adjustable shock.
I'm always surprised that folks put more bucks sooner into the engine when it's suspension, brakes, tires and taking good notes that will make the bike much more FUN than pumping up the motor.
Seems that those of us who prioritize handling are a "secret society" on Badweb.
I guess I won't say what I bought my forks w/ AK20's for, lol. I'm dying to install them. However, the 'Traxxion-rebuilt' shock I have is apparently out of nitrogen and is in need of rebuild. Suggestions? Stick with Traxxion or save my pennies for Penske/Ohlins/Elka?
If there is ANY WAY you could carve off a pound of your flesh and get the Penske 3-way adjustable, you should. Ride height adjustment really gives you options that are usable - especially if track differences get you changing from 180/55 to 190/55
I guess it depends where the pound comes from, lol.
Surprisingly (for the level of parts I have), I don't track the XB much...couple of days per year, max. I'm hoping to pick up a dedicated track bike, but it likely won't be an XB. Of course, this could always fall through and I'll continue using my XB for double duty (although I don't want to).
Is the 3-way really beneficial for mostly street riding? Even on the track, I'm only in the Novice group? I think with more regular track attendance, I can easily run with Intermediate, but I'm not there yet.
Were the ak20's specifically for the 47mm forks? The reason I ask is that I thought that the ak20's were of a modular design and worked in a variation of applications. If they were not fork specific then what was the benefit of the 47mm fork over the 41mm?
Not bashing, just trying to better understand the product since my next item is forks. Good buy no matter what the reason!
If you're not changing suspension settings with conditions on the track, save your money then - get a 2-way shock. You'll not gain a thing by changing ride height if you use same tire sizes and gearing.
You might consider Elka.
Seriously send Traxxion an email and get their take on this - they are really helpful. I don't owe them a nickel, paid retail so this is just because they've been really good to help me out with all my stupid questions over the years.
Honestly side by side the are lighter... dont ask me how the that happens. I didnt take them apart but I had a shop rebuild them and they said they are filled with oil and everything ready to go. Maybe the trees? I did notice the 1125R trees have a few holes in them in places the XB trees dont. Doesnt make sense to me but I dont have a scale really so its hard to tell but if i lift one and set it down and grab the 1125 forks they seem lighter
Speedfreaks101, 41mm to 47mm is a big difference. Even on say an FXR going from a 39 to a 41 front end helps a lot. Mainly due to less flex. I really just wanted to do the 47mm front forks, just happened to find a set with AK20's in them and couldnt pass them up. Plus I have an '03 so I got the short end of the stick. When I first got my XB i went to HD and ordered that suspension spring kit (forks and rear) only to find out the 03 XB9 had the front end and I couldnt use the springs.
Plus I hate how dinky the forks look on the bike... esp since they are mostly uncovered and you see a lot of them.
