Hi all,
I've got my 2005 Firebolt 12R in the shop right now due to a rough running motor.

I was caught in a storm on the Freeway and was riding for a couple miles in some pretty bad conditions when the motor felt like it was missing. I pulled off the freeway to a gas station where it idled for a minute and then died with a big old backfire to end it.

I got a buddy of mine to take it to his shop but they haven't taken a look at it except for cleaning out the air cleaner.

He says that it starts up fine cold and warms up beautifully. But when it all warmed up, it goes back to the rough idle and then dies.

Any ideas?

TIA

Jo

Either plugs or plug wires. It is common for a plug wire to rub against the motor, and when this happens it can cause the spark to jump and not make it to the sparkplug.

Thank you for your replies guys.

I thought about the plug wires, but then why would the bike run perfectly fine when it is started cold and then crappy when it warms up?

I had a similar problem last year.the bike started and ran great until it got hot then it sputtered and backfired.Once I parked it it would not start again.I had to replace the cam positioning sensor $150.00.Now it runs great.

Thanks Reiver for the reply.

My ride has been in the shop since last week, but my buddy says that it has been running well since Friday. I've not picked it up due to weather. He said that they put a little fuel dry in the tank and tightened the positive cable on the battery. I don't know why either would solve the problem, but it is running well. Regardless, I will look into the cam positioning sensor and maybe even get one as a spare.

BTW, did yours do it in the rain also?

definitely sounds like the spark plug wire, it has happened to me on my 06 but just on the rear plug wire, and only when it rained,

The reason it can run good when cold but then crappy when it warms up is called EXPANSION. The rubber can expand when it gets warm and then allow the spark to get thru it or if there is a small crack it can let the rain leak in and would then short that plug wire. I would still look at your plug wires and even just change them for the heck of it. It's not like it is a $500 part.

A marginal connection can be made worse by heat, since heat raises the resistance of a wire.
