I'm going to be buying an 08 Ulysses and it has a Drummer exhaust. I've always been hesitant to install an aftermarket exhaust on my current Buell because it seems like everyone who has issues with their bikes, also do not have the stock exhaust installed; is this my imagination? From your experience, does having an aftermarket cause problems for any of you?

Also, will I have problems finding someone to install the ECM maps down the road if there is ever a problem with the ECM installed? Do private shops or Harley dealers know how to do this for a Drummer?

Sorry for sounding a bit ignorant but I always stay away from aftermarket exhausts so I have no experience with them at all.

Thanks everyone.

I have 3 Buells: 1 with a race pipe, 1 with a full Force system, 1 with a Drummer SS pipe. All run great with no reliability issues (knocks on wood...).

as far as the ECM goes: skip the daler and hit of Erik Buell Racing for an ECM preprogrammed for that pipe. $250 and you'll be sailin smooth!

Andymnelson, the bike seems to run fine and sounds good. I am more concerned with a few years down the road from now, it already has 19,000 miles on it... if I'll have a hard time with the ECM. I know this is a stretch but lets pretend Erik Buell Racing goes out of business and he moves to Africa, never to be seen again, is there somewhere that would know what to do with the bike? Also, would I assume this bike has a race ECM installed or is it more probable that it is a stock ECM? Is there an easy way for me to tell?

Thanks again and sorry for so many questions.

It also seems like everyone that has died of a stroke has also eaten a cheeseburger at least once in their life. : )

In most cases no. Key word is most cases, I have seen issues of burnt valves that may or may not be related.

You found me, you can find others too : )

A good chunk of this board is familiar with the workings of the DDFI systems, and it isn't hard to learn for yourself.

It most likely has a stock ECM, the easy way to know for your 08 is to take off the seat and look, if it says "FOR RACE USE ONLY" in big font engraved on it, then you have a Race ECM. If not, it most likely is stock. (Small chance it was tuned aftermarket)

Froggy, thanks! SOOOO in most cases the stock ECM doesn't require any changes after a Drummer is installed????
Thanks again. If I sound paranoid its because after Buell went out of business I said my XB12 would be my last buell..
but like most others on here I can't help it, I love Buells.

I never said that. You will want to get it tuned or a race ECM regardless. : )

Is installing ecm maps something I can learn to do myself from home for relatively cheap? Is there a resource somewhere to learn this? Thanks again.

I have well over 70,000 miles on my bike and it's had the race exhaust on it since mile one, no problems.
Stator failure twice, but that was my bad, not the exhaust's.
