I'm looking at replacing the current red lens with a clear lens and one of those spinner LED lights. They say it's a direct replacement for the stock 1157 bulb. Is that the correct stock number for the rear brake lamp? I really need a service manual! Semper Fi Tatsu

Yes it is a direct replacment.....However, not DOT leagle due to the strobing and flashing.... Also the use of a clear lens is not recommended IMHO as it will dim the red LEDs.... Stay with the red lens as it is more visible...

I have the clear setup on my XB with no problem. People can see it fine. Go for it. It looks much better. Also change out the indicators/flashers for some clear lens ones and it looks great. D edited by dehorridge on June 15, 2004 |

stay away from those spinning LED "bulbs"... they are not bright, not well made, and annoying. Matter of fact, stay away from all of those 1157 LED "bulbs"... they are all garbage and you're putting yourself at risk by running an ineffective light... no matter what the idiots on ebay claim. The physical limitations of the size and type of LEDs used is what renders them as turds. Either do it right or keep your incandescents... unless you don't care about safety. BTW, a clear lens will not have any effect on the brightness of red LEDS... actually, they will usually shine through a little brighter. Crap LED setups behind a red lens may appear a little brighter because the red lens will catch some of the light from the LEDs and "spread" it a little bit. A clear lens with a well made LED retrofit will kick the crap out of anything else you can put on the back of your bike. Trust me, I work with LEDs for a living. Talk to Al at American Sport Bike for the good stuff.

clear alternatives makes nice clear lenses and they sell colored bulbs... I wouldn't recommend their LED setups though. |

I took the stock tail light and split it in two with a piece of aluminum. Then put a bulb on eack side. Used a trailer light adapter. Now, I have two bulbs that come on for the brake [super bright with two], When I activate the turn signal, that side blinks and the other works as the brake. |

I used normal bulbs with red covers. Very bright. I have also tried those bulbs that are chrome looking but shine the appropriate color. Not as bright but offer a cleaner, no red when off, look. The LED 1157's you get from the auto parts store are to dim for my liking. Just my .02s. |

I bought a light from Heavycycles for my 2002 M2 and call it what you want, I have no complaints. The Turn signals look awesome, the fit was perfect, and the brake lights are much brighter then the set my dad got for his sportster from Küryakyn. |

Hey 420, if labor and expertise apparently aren't worth anything, and the parts are only $30 to make your own, then why dont you? |

Hey Joe, would you do a BadWeb discount? I'm not buying right now, cause I'd want to talk to my wife first, but I've been wanting something really bright for those behind me, and I just read the new review on WebBikeWorld, so I know if I'm gonna go a new direction it'll be yours. |

I'll do a BadWeb discount, and will donate a few beans to the forum as well, seeing that I'm not a sponsor yet. American Sport Bike also carries the LEDs too, if you would like to purchase from them. BTW, 420, I have no intentions on getting into a pissing match with you about this, but none of the parts I use are available at RS except for a few resistors. You get what you pay for when it comes to these lights... I design all of the LED assemblies, have the circuit boards made locally, assemble them all in-house, and test each one personally. Nothing is mass produced in Asia, I don't cut corners to save a few pennies, I use as many American made components as possible, and I'm a perfectionist... I know what goes into the lights and I should probably be charging more for them. I also ride and will only make products that I would want to put on my own bike. Hasnfefr, very clever... nice work! edited by drheathenscum on June 21, 2004 |

Thank you 420 and Drheathenscum. Drheathenscum, Could you make something custom that would fit my application? Ball park figure? It would prob work if it were two seperate fixtures. Like the lense divided down the middle. With each acting like a dual filament bulb. |

I could probably take the board pictured above and split it... or that one is available with integrated amber signals on the ends. It works excellent with a clear lens. Or, I have something in the "Skunkworks" lab that would be totally killer, all red, and brighter than you would ever need... totally custom made, a wee bit experimental, and it may be a bit pricey. Send me an email when you have a chance. |

Here is the light Joe made for my M2 It is EXTREMELY bright for a brake. Everyone notices it, and that is a good thing when you are slowing down! edited by koz5150 on June 23, 2004 |
