Found an add on Craigslist for a '05 xb12r. I didint post the actual add but here is the description directly from it. What do you guys think about the repairs possibly needed? Anyone have any insight as to what it might be? "Im selling my 2005 Buell Firebolt for 2500. The Miles is unknown due to when i bought the bike it had no gages. Gages are from a 2003 xb9r. Also the plastics that are one the bike are off the xb9r also. they are blue and good condition. The bike does start right up and run. Ive only owned the bike since the end of the summer. The bike is out of Montana and i never transfured the title. It is clean and clear to transfur i just didnt know where my life was headed and never registured it. The bike does have a little trouble with 2nd gear but it does work. The shifter lever doesnt always reset its self after shifting gears. the 2nd gear problem is a deal where it occationally comes out gear and goes to neutral. been told it is an easy fix. the exhaust on the bike is jarden gp1 and the packing blew out of the muffler, so i could use new exhaust but it funtions for the time being. Pretty firm on the price but may negotioate a little. No trades please. Thanks New Tires " Im thinking of going and getting it this weekend! So a quick reply would be awesome! |

Mileage? Why was the cluster and plastics changed? Sounds like the bike may have lived an interesting life. All in all, if you can get the title through clean and clear, $2500 isn't a bad price. The transmission would be the least of my concerns, if you're savvy enough to repair, as needed. |

Ya the mileage thing worries me a bit. But I do find myself to be "savvy" as I have my own auto shop at my disposal. The tranny issue doesnt seem to concern me all that much. A weekend tear down and some parts is the best I could hope for. Plus it would give me a chance for a complete go-through and replace any worn parts to make sure she is good and reliable for the old lady. It is only a HD motor after all. |

Sounds like a good start. The price seems reasonable, but there are some issues to factor like the new cluster, worthless exhaust, etc. You can probably get some wiggle room with it based on an inspection. If it were closer I'd consider it as a track bike. |

i'd pass on it, you can find XBs in fine condition in the 3-3.5K range... tranny issue alone is gonna require splitting the cases, unless its just an adjustment issue. Your ready to pull the motor? plus the 03 guages and no known mileage just seem shady.. my .02 |

that's sketchy . . . if you're looking for a little project that might be cool though, but I'd expect to spend probably at least as much as the asking price to get everything sorted out, and I wouldn't ever plan on selling the bike again |

The bike has title issues and has most likely been down, as evidence by all the new bodywork and gages. Then there is the trans problem and exhaust issue. After everything is fixed, you might be into it for more than a clean bike. |

the 2nd gear problem is a deal where it occationally comes out gear and goes to neutral. Run away |

I'd buy it, but not for $2500. It has a shady past, possible transmission damage, and who knows what else. I'd bite for $1500, but remember you are going to have to split that motor open to fix the trans. |

Have the vin and engine number run by your local P.D. before you commit to purchase. |

Teeps is absolutely right, I will never get into any vehicle without running the vin number first. Let me know about running the vin number. I bought a bike recently and got the carfax deal of 4 vehicles, I still have two spots open....for chips and a beer |

While we're on the topic of VIN checks, do yourself a favor and buy ALL of the them. I looked at a bike last year that Carfax said was clean but Autocheck said was stolen. Used Autocheck to buy my STi and later found out it was in an accident and had another owner than was reported. Carfax caught that snafu, but lesson learned: buy all you can because they don't all do the same things. |

Run BOTH VIN numbers - engine and chassis - if they're NOT the same, you can bet there are issues. |

scary.. repaired written off or borrowed from a previous owner without their knowing maybe. I've heard of cut'n'paste using windows.. But on a bike, hmm Run the numbers, plates and see where the rabbit hole leads you. $1500, maybe.. track bike.. |

Well I drove the 2 hours to go look at her with cash in pocket. Bike ran good, drove well. Took the laptop to run the Vin. Both Vin's Do match and came back clean. No prior salvage or theft. Had the local PD run it also and its currently not stolen. Title is not an issue as it is signed by the original seller and not filled out by the purchaser. So title transfer is good to go. She just seems to need some minor things. New Muffler, Replace the Pazzo's(which are for sale since I cant put them on my 1125) And it needs new grips. Im going to do a thorough inspection tomorrow and maintinence. Im not too concerned about the mileage. She has just been loved and rode hard. Engine repairs are not that daunting to me and she will probably get it done anyway. The seller seemed more uninformed and clueless than anything. It will be a great starter bike for the wife and then most likely a good track bike there after. (Message edited by spike240sx on February 23, 2011) |

Looks like they are $180 new. They are anodized blue with black adjusters. They are also shorties. I have not found any wear or scratches on them. They look brand new. So I was thinking $125 plus shipping. I still need to verify that they are real and not knock offs first. |

Congrats! I still think it sounds like a good deal. Like I said yesterday, I wouldn't be too concerned for splitting the cases, it really isn't very difficult. There are tons of parts floating around, so you can always piece together used parts if need be. Good luck with the project! I've bought a few vehicles like this and with the exception of one, I always made out. What scares most people could be a goldmine if you don't mind investing some time and research. |
