Author Message   Gunut75 Posted on Saturday, January 01, 2011 - 12:58 pm:        I was wondering......When the oil pump was redesigned in 07 to provide more scavenging, was this a HUGE improvement? I'm curious because I'm going to inspect my pump drive gear on my 05 soon, and if I have to replace it, would it be better to get the newer pump assembly and put it on the bike? I am going to be running a newer style swingarm with an 05 motor/pump. I read in the KV that the whole assemblies will fit the 05 XB. Buell didn't tout the upgrade in the advertising, it was just mentioned in the 07 model changes book which is apparently intended for dealer personnel. It did seem like a significant number of 06 Ulysses owners (not sure about other XB models) complained about higher-than-expected oil consumption, so I kind of think that might have been the driver behind the upgrade to the oil pump. If you can keep the oil sucked out of the crankcase, less gets flung up into the cylinders where it can get past the rings and be burned. There seemed to be fewer complaints with the 07 models. The oil pump is pretty cheap (~$100?) and is easy to change. One note though- you know the drive gear in question is the one on the crankshaft (not the one on the end of the oil pump), so if you've got a bad gear replacing the oil pump doesn't fix it. (Message edited by Hughlysses on January 02, 2011)   Dhays1775 Posted on Sunday, January 02, 2011 - 09:46 am:        correct me if i'm wrong, but to the best of my knowledge, it wasn't a HUGE improvement. it was simply a stronger gear that flowed a little more. that is my understanding of it. as far as i would suggest, if you want the extra peace of mind about your oiling system, put the newer one on! personally, i would go for it.   Firemanjim Posted on Monday, January 03, 2011 - 12:57 pm:        Bigger scavenge section,should come with longer bolts, definite improvement. Should be used on all oil pump replacements.Get the upgraded drive gear as well.   1324 Posted on Tuesday, January 04, 2011 - 11:29 am:        What are the part numbers for the pump assembly and drive gear? I need to drop my engine to fix some leaky valve seals, and may as well add this onto my list.
