Tomorrow Im going to pick up an XB engine that I bought used from a wrecker off Yahoo Auctions (Japanese ebay)that i paid about $900 for. The bike it came from had been crashed but the engine has only done 5000 miles and looks perfect(brand new).

The Google translation of what the seller says is "Great engine but has been in an accidnet, may need repairs". It also said, "swing arm attachment currently lacking".

Ive since discovered through a Japanese friend that there may in fact be a problem. Although there is no clear photo of it, it appears that the 'swing arm pivot shaft pinch bolt' section has snapped off the crank case. Meaning that the swing arm can't be attached to the engine.

This is something that I would imagine can't be repaired and would require replacing one half of the crank case. This is something that I was trying to avoid hence buying this replacement engine in the first place.

Ive already paid this guy and am simply off to pick it up.

Any ideas whether this can be repaired? How screwed am I?

From your description I would say you are screwed. It's a parts engine.
However, thats a good price for a low mileage parts engine.

Parts or build a rigid frame hopper and not use the pivot shaft

You are screwed but you might be able to bring it to a builder to get it fixed. I wouldn't count on it though. Even if you could get it fixed it would be pretty pricey.

If they still have the broken off piece, the welder would be worth a try.

Looks like im gettng my money back after a bit of haggling minus a cancellation fee and the cost of going to get it and return it. Still better than trying to repair it. Now im back to square one.
