I am up for my 10K on a 2009 Firebolt XB12R. Along with a patch on a nail on a rear tire that is only got 2K on it. I am thinking of going to a shop other then HD? The shop has a good reputation and services a lot of BMW Bikes. RPM Cycles in Ventura, CA. There are no electrical issues and it has been checked for recall info in the last 5K. It seems from my experience and this board that the HD / Buell places are just extra money for some guys that do not respect or care about Buell. From looking over the Owners Manual there does not seem to be anything major beside changing the Fluids and check Nuts & Bolts. What are the thoughts of other folk on here? Also any concerns about a proper patch on a tire vs a new one? |

Service - If possible, pickup the service manual and change the oil/filer and primary fluid on your own, ride it another 5k miles and repeat. (Skip the fork oil change) It is simply to do, I made a picture guide on it a while back. While you are in there check the clutch and primary chain adjustments. I understand you may not be able to work on your bike for various reasons, but if you can, do it. You will save a buttload of coin and won't be without a bike for indefinite periods of time. As for tire - If the nail is in the center and nowhere near the sidewall, plug it and enjoy. The closer it is to the sidewall, the harder it will be to plug and stay plugged due to the stress of tire flexing. If it is in the sidewall, change it ASAP. |

I'm basically reiterating everything Froggy just said... I'm also due for the 10k service on my '09 xb12ss, going to do the service myself and I'm really not very mechanically inclined. It's just changing the oil/filter, checking primary adjustment, and fork oil. Consensus seems to be that unless you are racing and really working the forks it's really not necessary to change the fork oil. Get a copy of the service manual, it outlines how to do everything. For the nail in the rear tire, I picked up a screw in the center of my oem rear within it's first 1k miles...patched it and it was fine for another 4k miles or so until it started to slowly leak, but by then it was in need or replacement anyway. Just found some random piece of metal near the center of the rear today (only about 4k on pilot road 2ct's) while playing with my new front/rear stands, going to have it patched when I swap tires to my new wheels and ride it for (hopefully) another 10k miles. |
