I took the xb in to the dealer to get new fork seals installed. called to see if bike was ready to go. they tell me the forks slipped out of the fixture, and they "broke a fork" the plan is to remove a set of forks from the demo xb and install on my bike , first thing on tuesday morning. so i wonder if they will be putting new seals in the used forks they are putting on my bike? i did not think to ask. 2 year warranty, but i dont really want to be a warranty baby. sure am glad i have the sportster to hot rod around on.

Ummm, if they broke them, why are they giving you used parts!?!?

Will the demo forks be temporary while they get a brand new replacement?

They are probably giving you the demo parts for the sake of time... they will still be covered by warranty. If it is an issue for you... mention it.

I didn't need to hear this! My 9S goes in next week to get fork oil replaced. I asked the dealer about 2 weeks ago if they had the correct equipment to service the forks (i.e. the fork compressing/holding tools), he just looked at me kinda weird and said he'd "check and make sure they had the right equipment" to service the forks (?). Now I'm thinking, maybe they don't, but will try and invent some way of opening the forks without using the correct tools!!!!! AAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
Please, Fullpower, tell me they were using the specified equipment to do your service...PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

Take a look in your service manual at the "special tools". All you need is a mate to give you hand and it is easy.

i also asked the service writer if they had the correct fixture/tool for xb fork service. first week he said he would check with the technician, second week he said they were good to go. yes, they are giving me slightly used forks off a demo model with 300 miles on. in the interest of getting me on the road quick. i DO hope they are putting new seals in the used forks first. i should have checked on that. still on warranty.

no i think they are being real cool about it. disabling a running saleable motorcycle to get a customer on the road fast is excellent customer service. they are using my fork internals, NEW seals, and an unspecified salvage part from a demo XB9. beats waiting a week for parts, we have a real short season here, so i would rather be riding with a used (waranteed) part than waiting for parts. the dealer is 90 minutes away, and they said they will wait for me after hours to pick up the bike. and a spare drive belt.

Does removing the forks yourself void the warranty? Mine isn't under warranty (duh!)... but I've always removed the forks myself as it's basically a "nuts and bolts" type job and it removes one element from the hands of the tech who might not be as careful as you. I started doing that when, years ago, (different bike, different brand), a tech installed one fork tube about a half inch higher than the other!

BTW... Don't know anything about the XB, but removing the forks from a tuber (S3) doesn't require half the steps as outlined in the service manual.

Just curious... what broke when they dropped it? A casting?

FullPower, Christ you have an 04 Bike. The Dealer Broke a part, They should replace it, with a brand New Part. It's cool, they are scrounging a demo bike for parts, and that is OK, if it's until the NEW parts arrive. That's just Me, If your happy with their band aid, that is what counts. I'm not trying to cause trouble. I just don't think they are doing the right thing. If they blew your motor, would you want a used demo one?, or tires, or battery, or transmission?

i got the bike back yesterday. it was just the aluminum cap they boogered up. they robbed one off a xb9. bike is good. no leaks.
