Thought seeing as I was gonna check the primary chain adjuster "shoe" condition (10,000 mile service), I'd just order another one in case the first one was out of spec and needed to be changed (it's called planning ahead). So I go to the dealership to order the "shoe", as from the service manual, this adjuster breaks down into three components, so all you really need is the "shoe", as the adjusting bolt, nut and mounting plate for the shoe don't wear out. Dingbat at the counter says there's no part number, so I have to order the whole assembly !?!? Costs $30.00+ Cdn.! OUCH!
So I've got the part at home on the weekend doing the adjuster service check, and sure enough, right on the brand new BLUE (as in Pegasus - the old shoe is black) "shoe" is the part number !!!!!!!
In case any of you are about to get eqaully stiffed by your respective dealer, the new part number (for shoe only) is H-D 40197-02A.
The "A" is the only change in part number from the original piece on my '03 XB9S.
Maybe I'll go back to the dealership and see where the used "shoe" might fit!!!!!!!!

I replaced my shoe last week at 13,000 miles. It was barely out of specs. I had also ordered mine well in advance. It was $24 or $26.

Anyone know if that part number corresponds to a particular model of Harley? Just in case I'm in need of a part at a non-Buell type dealer, it's a handy thing to know (like the fact the Firebolt uses the same spark plug as a V-ROD)

Chainsaw...was the $24-26 for just the plastic "shoe", or did you also have to purchase the whole threaded adjuster/nut as well for that price?

It's the whole shebang. The shoe doesn't just slip off the metal plate and stud, I tried getting the old one off (without the use of tools) to no avail. : )

Chainsaw, yes it does slip off (sorta)...a light tap, tap, tap with a rubber mallet knocks if off with ease! That's when I got a little peeved with having to buy the whole unit, realizing how easy it was to remove and replace the "shoe".
My parts guy (as usual) couldn't even locate the original numbered part on the computer (it's stamped right on the back face of the shoe!)...go figure?????

The Buell Parts manual shows it all as one part number, so I didn't try to hammer it out. Figured I gotta buy the whole thing anyway...along with a primary gasket and shaft seal!

the p/n on the shoe may not be a Buell/HD p/n, but, rather, the p/n from the manufacturer . . . . tuber tensioners also were available only as assemblies

Bomber...funny, the part number starts with "H-D..." (see my first entry above). Strange they would have us throwing out a perfectly useable mounting plate attached to a perfectly fine threaded bolt attached to a perfectly fine nyloc nut (all of which will NEVER WEAR OUT!). Doesn't seem terribly efficient nor environmentally friendly to be dumping all that metal (speaking collectively for the 10,000+? Buells out there...not just my throw-away parts).
Well, at least the new shoes are PEGASUS BLUE!!!!!!

a nyloc nut is a one time use nut. how many shoes do you want to break tapping on or would you like a loose fit shoe? buck up and pay the man, he is doing it for a reason.and the a on the part # is for the change in color and material w/ a bulkier plate. have you seen how much the other bike shoes cost w/out plates? you got the no hassle deal. realize it. you'll save more money not buying so many klenex's in the snivveling end.
