No it was still running on both, but the light was on, fan did not come on when I turned it off, or while I was riding it. "Ride it till the engine seizes." Ski

Yea, mine was doing the same thing with a bad rear eng temp sensor. That's my bet. Any takers? Ski, you still coming out to Yuma before you leave for Oki? I know Desert Talon is coming... |

I'd love too, but I got to check the calendar. I think that's about the same timeframe I was looking at riding the first leg of the ride across America. Elizabeth really wants to go. So, we may be going with you instead... I of course, want to do both! If it's upside down and on fire, you've gone too fast! |

I hope so, I'd really hate to see another serious problem, and certainly not with the same guy. |

No offense, but those seem like pretty major problems. Have you been running your bike extremely hard? True, that is a lot of miles, but to have the engine die at 34K sounds like cause for concern. I've been lurking on this board for a while. I like the XB9R but have heard spotty things about Buell's reliability. |

WHAT? The XB is one of the most reliable bikes on the market in my opinion. Yes, there will be failures, but I've seen just as many on ricers. As far as factory observed problems with the model, it's really been minimal... |

Moonrunrs... a couple of things here for perspective... First of all, a major failure at 34k on a japanese sport bike is probably about average, if not doing better then average. You can't even address worn shift dogs without splitting the cases on most of them. Tourers are different bikes doing different things, don't compare with them. And finally, I don't want to meddle where it is none of my business, but in the case of this failure, there was something that smells like somebody (not Ski) making a bad decision, rather then some sort of mechanical defect in design or implementation of the XB9. Ski's bike had something wrong, he took it to the shop, they said something about a cracked oil pump and a quick fix, and told him to ride it. Shortly thereafter the entire engine is trashed. I have an idea why the oil pump was cracked, and at that point there is a chance it could have been fixed with about $50 worth of parts and 3 or 4 hours labor. There is also a chance he would have needed a total rebuild anyway. There is also a 20 minute inspection procedure (costs $2 for a replacement gasket) that could have been done every fourth oil change that could have easily spotted the problem before any damage was done. But lets not get into it here... Ski's bike was under warranty, and his dealer made it right, and all we can do at this point is get people in trouble for making a bad situation right for Ski. So lets let it go... but use Ski's bike as a data point to say an XB9 will hold up every bit as good as Japanese sport bikes, and maybe even better. You could also use it as a data point to say that if you are going to put a lot of miles on the bike, and have a dealer that will go to bat for you, the extended warranty is a very good deal. |

In Cycle mag this month there were three NHTSB safety recalls-One BMW and two jap bikes. No Buells in there. Hmmmm. MY XB has been bullet proof!

I still love my dirty lil ho, The wife is trying to get me to buy a Jap bike...won't happen, been there done that. As far as how I ride, Yeah I ride the SH*T out of it, twisties every chance I get, and average 100+ mph everyday between 20-45 minutes each day. Yes I do all my scheduled service maintenance also. Even though I disagree with every 2500 miles I still do it like clock work. And with an unlimited mileage warranty, your damn right I'm going to push it. "Ride it till the engine seizes." Ski |

thanks for the responses. didn't mean that as a flame. I enjoy hearing feedback from Xb owner as, like I said, I've been lurking here for a while because I'm still thinking of buying an XB9r. I sold my Suzuki 4 weeks ago, test rode the XB a while back and thought it was awesome -- handling, looks, torque, etc. In my research, I found www.mybuell.com and a few other sites and got scared. My friend owns a 2000 M2 and he's had 4-5 problems with it since he's owned it and put only about 1000 miles on it. I like the Cyclone and wish buell would develop an XB version of that bike. Ski, I think you have the highest mileage on this board. I know you've been posting how well it's been running, but haven't read every single one of your messages. BTW, I'm glad your extended warranty took care of it. That more than paid for itself right there. If any other XB owners have feedback on their reliability, I'd love to hear it.

I have a 2000 Cyclone... don't compare them to the XB's in terms of reliability, its a day and night difference. Heck, by the time the Cyclone got to 2002, it was a far more reliable bike already anyway, I bet much of the stuff your buddy fixed (or is about to fix ) was already addressed on the '02 model.

Mybuell.com mostly deals with the Blast and earlier Buells. Whine and sour grapes... Why do you think Buell increased the warranty to 2 years for the '04 models?

I could easily see a fan wire getting kinked or partially cut when replacing an engine, and then totally letting go month later. It sounds like an honest mistake that the dealer made right. |
