I noticed some rust on the external surface of my wheels bearings. Nothing serious but it is anyway there and it makes me feel uncomfortable. Rear wheel seems more affected. I didn't remove the wheels (I have no stand so it is not that easy) but I am wondering what your bearings are looking like? 10k miles on them.

I should change the tires in these days so I can call the HD dealer and have the bearings replaced as well ... but going to HD would make the bill more expensive. SO I'd do that if and only if necessary. I am not changing the bearings myself as I have no specific tools to extract them (and I do not want to damage the bores).

Opinions? Experiences? I cannot take pics right now ... umpf.

Thanks

The outer races and inner part DO get a little surface rust on them over time. Mine have 17k on them, and have had surface rust from about 8k. I have no problems. To check them, take a ride, and shut the motor down while going down a hill in neutral. You will hear if there are any problems. If it sounds like smooth sailing, carry on...........

the ones I am about to take off as soon as I figure a way to lift my bike with out a stand or break down and order a stand has a little in between the wheel and the bearing as well but I have two shinny new bearings in the plastic that are going to go on there soon.

Just make sure to spin the bearings with your finger when you remove the wheel.
They should turn smoothly, with only a little force, and not be notchy at all.

If you see any signs of water coming OUT of them, then you have something to worry about. Just ask on the Uly forum! (kidding, don't ask, it's been beat to death, and there is a ton of info available by searching).

If you bearings look like this on the outher edge and the wheels are turning silent ,they are still okay!
you can also put a little bit of grease on the outside of the bearings for protection!

and a cheap way to lift the buell is with one or two blocks of wood under the muffler.
(sidestand out of course!)
