Does anyone have a functioning link to the "77 Connector" document referenced in so many archived threads? I think 1324 is suffering from a 77 failure and his bike is stranded at my house right now.

77 Connector strikes again. Mine wasn't melted, but there was definitely only intermittent connectivity at best. Thanks GOD for the interweb. Troubleshooting this without knowing about the connector would have really sucked...

I'm just glad your bike died 100 miles from home. After all the crap you fed me that your XB was SO much more reliable than my 1125 you deserve it. Of course, it was mostly a PIA for ME since I had to ride home, get the truck and trailer and save your a$$.

My 77 connector went bad and my bike died just as I was slowing down to turn into my driveway. I put in the upgraded connector and it's been 22K miles of trouble free riding since. In a pinch it could be fixed by soldering the wires together and taping them up. I was able to clean up the original well enough to ride until the upgrade came in.

BadWeb rocks! I had an idea of exactly what to look for because of this place.

We just soldered them together and shrink wrapped.

Yep...and the connectors can still be disconnected - if you heat them up, lol. Solder = my solution.

that document is a good piece of info to have. a few weeks ago i broke down (bike ran fine until i stopped fro gas, then it clicked teh starter and headlights went dim. gas-station inspection found that the 77 connector had fried.

today i just replaced the VR with a brand-new one from teh dealer, soldering in the new-style detuch connectors. everything was looking perfect until it started teh bike and my fluke says i am still only getting 1.5-1.6 vdc from the VR.

the fuses and diodes checked -good-
stator is putting out ~35 volts ac (measured leg-to-leg) at 2k rpm, and has no shorts to ground on any phase/leg. all the legs have between .2-.3 ohms resistance to eachother. batt voltage is 12.8vdc.

if it's not the VR, and then stator checks out good, then .....
WTF?!? any body know what might be wrong? i'll keep reading my service manual until someone posts up

Where are you measuring the 1.5V? At the battery? Re-check those connections. Assuming you didn't get a bad VR, there isn't anything else to fail that you didn't already check.

If you tried measuring the output of the VR with it disconnected and engine running then you won't measure very much at all as it appears the regulator shuts down in a 'no load' condition. When I was going through the fault-finding stage that preceded the '77' document I went up that particular blind alley.....

Triple check you have the positive and negative wires in the correct orientation after your new connector was fitted (the negative output of the regulator is connected directly to the finned body and can be measured as zero ohms with a multi-meter if there is any doubt) and with the regulator plugged in and engine running measure the DC voltage at the battery. This should be in the order of 13volts at 3000rpm.

ahhh, "NO-LOAD" that makes sense.
yes, i was measuring the voltage at the 77 connector, not hooked up to the bike.

all is right in my little world now. >13 volts at teh new battery with the 77 connector connected.
