My 08 Uly died unexectedly about 15 miles from home. Under warranty with 5k service just completed. I hitchhiked home and have to go back and a. trailer it. b. put gas in and trailer it. c. get it towed. No warning... just stopped in the road after running fine for 60 miles on a sunny dry day. 1. It has 145 miles on this tank of gas. I did not get a low fuel warning and the reserve counter did not start, but I suppose it could be the fuel and it is worth topping off to be sure. I tried a dipstick (twig) in the tank and it is down low. THAT is an easy fix. Does the reserve fuel light ever fail to come on that we know of? I would have expected more from a tank of gas 2. Are there any known issues with ECM or electronics that just quit catastrophically? (The bike cranks, but does not start. I did not look for spark). 3. Who is the closest dealer that will work on Buell's from Colorado Springs if I cannot get this going? Isn't there a Harley Dealer East of the Springs that takes them in? I have roadside asst on my insurance, but am kind of hoping I ran it out of gas. Any tips will be helpful. Eric |

Is it under the seat or elsewhere? |

I found a schematic. First 10A fuse under the aux under the seat. I also found a number of threads that indicate a known problem with the fuel pumps in heat (like today). I will take a couple spares with me. |

To the best of my knowledge the fuel pump fuse issue is only on 09's. Not that it can't be the case, I haven't heard of that happening on an 08 (yet). |

Thanks guys. It was a blown fuel pump fuse. Bummer day. I had to hitchhike home, pinged younze, researched online, went and picked my kid up from school, raced to the bike and found just like the other Buell page and you stated... fuel pump is faulty and blows the fuse on hot days. I replaced the fuse and got some extras on the way home. Now, I need to find out if HD will warranty replace the pump without trying to replicate until I am stuck on the road hitchhiking again even though it is a known issue. I hope they will just cowboy up with a tech bulletin or some such fix already identified, order the part and install it without further issue. Anyhow, thanks for your help... spot on.http://www.buellxb.com/Buell-XB-Forum/Buell-Lightning-XB12S-XB12Ss-CityX-XB12Scg/Blown-Fuel-Pump-Fuse (Message edited by klcm54a on September 29, 2010) |

Carry a handful of spare fuses under the seat. Everything I have read shows that it rarely happens, usually only with lower fuel amounts and on a hot day. It seems to be heat related based on what I have read here. The 2010's came with a new fuel pump design that can handle higher temperatures. With some luck, you should be able to get your dealer to swap out the fuel pump. Tell them it has happened a few times, and every time it has happened you were starting to get low on gas and it was a hot day. It will be hard for them to replicate it, so the more info you can give them the better. Don't mention you read about it on the internet though! |

The dealer got a fuel pump for my '09 XB9SX early this month[8-9 blown fuses in 18 months], but I haven't let them pick the bike up yet because the weather has been too good. The wife[Blast] and I are going for a weekend ride and I may let them install the pump soon after that. I don't know what I will do with all of those extra fuses in my saddlebag. |
