My VR is shot - only putting out 4 volts. All other charging components are fine.

After much reviews (in particular 1125 section), I purchased a MOSFET regulator (FH012AA), which is used in Yamaha R1. Due to the larger size, I need to relocate the VR.

I'm considering placing in the top cavity of the inner air box (where the exhaust value regulator was originally located). There's plenty of room there to secure the VR. My only concern is whether sufficient air flow exists there to cool it.

Anyone relocate the VR? If so, where did you move it to?

I've never experienced any RR problems on either of my Buells, so I'll ask the obvious...why 'upgrade'? I've heard of some failures, but nearly the same failure rate as other brands I can think of. Maybe a stock replacement is sufficient.

Also, I'd try my best to put it back in the stock location. There is a lot of airflow there for cooling. If you tuck it away, I'd definitely try to get more air over it (like you're trying to ask here). Maybe try a computer size fan? I had one on my VFR and it worked really well...

This is the first time I too experienced VR problem. I have heard of others here having replaced theirs.

The MOSFET regulator I bought is a superior product according to all the articles I've read & it's cheaper. It's the same one used in VFR.

How hot did it get in your VFR? and where was it located?

Yes,

The VFR unit overheated because it was located up inside the tail plastics. There was a vent close by, but I don't know how much airflow it saw. Mounting a fan on it really pulled air. The previous owner did the modification, but I know he ran over 20k on the setup when I bought it from him. I put another 3-4k on it as-is with no issues.

The RR's on the SV's were also prone to failure. I replaced the stock unit with one from a CBR600 and my issues ceased. Maybe the common theme is Honda...

Either way, post up what you did...would be good for others. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed and hope I'm not one of those 'others'. I'll keep running my heated grips and vest to keep the RR load down, lol.
