Hi all,

Lately I've been hearing a squeaking noise coming from my 2003 XB9r. Here's what's going on:

1) It only happens when the bike is warmed up.
2) It only happens when the bike is in motion, usually low speeds.
3) It sounds like metal on metal.
4) It sounds like it's coming somewhere forward of my seating position.
5) It sounds like something is cycling.. Meaning, it squeaks, stops, squeaks, stops, etc. And it's not constant. It will squeak a bit (sometimes loud, sometimes not) and then stop for no apparent reason. At least for a bit.

I drive it around the city (San Francisco) everyday, so it's a lot of stop/start driving conditions. As I get to where I'm going, it always seems like the sound is more constant, which is why I think it has something to do with it being warmed up.

Any and all ideas are welcome. I'm trying to get an appointment at the dealer for tomorrow or the next day, but would prefer to avoid taking it in if I can avoid it (it's my main mode of transportation).

Thanks!

Also check your rear wheel bearings.

Don't know if it helps, but my belt squeaks as its rolling across the idler pulley. Nothing is wrong with either one. Just makes noise. I can only hear it at low speeds, so I go faster...problem solved.

Hey Paste

Eeenteresting. I live in San Franciso too. Having a similar prob with my '03 XB9S. 5k and basic mods: race pipe, race ECM, K&N, breather bypass, XB12 airbox top, Uly RS scoop.

The bike started acting up last weekend in the hot weather. Idles too low (800 rpm) when warming up. Runs real rough, bogs off the line... like it was about to die. Runs a bit better after it warms up and at higher RPM (4.5k plus). Major popping on decel but the race kit pipe accounts for some of that. The gas tank (frame) felt very hot to the touch but maybe that's normal on hot sunny days. Then, stopped in neutral, a real loud cyclic squeaking started, lasted a long few seconds, then stopped. I shut the motor off, the fan did not kick on as it usually would. I rode it home later, and the fan never came on.

My first guess was the fan burned out, but it tests OK and the fuse is good.

Trouble lights all act/read normal. Can't be idler pulley or wheel bearings since I wasnt rolling when it squealed. I'll look for exhaust leaks but it sure didnt sound like one. So I'm stumped.... and worried that maybe there's a bearing seizing up in the motor.

I checked and no there's no prank whistle stuffed in the muffler. More suggestions on what/where to look next welcome...

Well, I changed the oil yesterday (swingarm and primary) and the squeaking seems to have died down a bit, but hasn't gone away completely.

I've noticed that it only happens in second gear (not too much) and first gear (frequently). Could it have something to do with the clutch?

I haven't measured the play in the primary, but I'm wondering if that has something to do with it. Any ideas?

Grab the front pulley at the tranny and try to wiggle it around.
5th gear bearing?
