So my 2008 Firebolt is upsetting me as of today.

I took it out for a ride and my check engine light came on. So I went back home and put ECMspy on it and ECMspy isnt pulling up any trouble codes (tried with the bike running and just the key/ignition on). It shows no current or historical data but yet the check engine light is still on. Everything on the bike is running great. Could it possibly be an ECM issue?

Yes I know its an 08 and Im using ECMspy on it, Ive always been able to read codes before though.

Anyone have any ideas here?

I think that a bad servo would throw a CEL without a code.

Interesting, am I able to turn the servo off on an 08 via ECMspy do you know?

Anyone have a good servo I could borrow? I will pay shipping both ways...

The CEL will also come on if you have a faulty ground somewhere. On mine, it was the headlight wiring, check to see if both headlights are on or come on. Wiggle the wires to see if there is any change.

mine was doing the same thing it was the exhaust valve servo took me for ever to trap it and get a code it was on the side of the road pulling codes with a jumper and counting flashes

check it the old fashioned way, by shorting out pins 1 and 2 on the data plug, and then turning on the bike and watching how many flashes you get from the CEL.
then look it up in the manual to see what the code is...

I've got a servo from an 06 Uly with 50 miles on it.

If it fixes your problem, you can keep it.

I know 2 people who had bad servo's on the exhaust as well I would go there. Fatty good on you bro!!!! Thats Buell for ya!!!!!

I agree with Iamarchangel, a bad ground can cause the ECM to not function correctly and result in a check engine light without a code.

The engine temp is one of the codes that will come on then go out with out going into a hard code that gets stored in the ecm. If this does it often . do a datalog and about the time the temp is on you will see the temps in the log.

if your hooked to the bike with tunerpro RT V5 and on the logging /live view side you can set a gauge to beep after it gets so warm. when riding you can view or when you get home just play it back and watch the temps needle. this will tell you exactly what it is regardless if the code is a stored code or not.

guess I should have read more. the servo's are know to cause this as well. (good call guys)

if you get a short to ground on the front injector code.
I know it sounds crazy but check the front spark plug wire. they are in a bad location and rub through on the wiring. sending spark into the harness making havoc in the ecu.

Where are all the grounding points on the firebolt?

I know there is one on the front of the frame, then the grounding cable under the airbox cover. I also think that the frame is grounded to the engine at that lower swaybar looking fastener. The subframe is grounded to the frame at the 4 bolts that hold the subframe in place.

Am I missing any spots to check?

Ft_bstrd- I will double check all the grounds and clean them up, if that doesnt work I will let you know!

I recently had a cel situation with my '08 Firebolt as well. It would come on as soon as the engine went over 2K rpm and stay on until next start up. I too thought it was the exhaust valve actuator (that went out once before) but the sound of the bike wasn't any different - it definitely sounds different when the exhaust valve isn't working right.
I took off the battery cables and cleaned them and the terminals (there was no obvious dirt or corrosion), re-secured them and trickled charged it overnight. I have not had the cel come on abnormally since.

I checked all of the grounds today and even took my dremel tool and sanded the grounding points slightly.

There is no change to the CEL.

The CEL comes on for the initial self test, momentarily goes out, then comes back on a couple seconds later (BEFORE the engine is even started).

I did however pull the airbox and start the bike, play with the throttle at all RPM ranges and the servo is doing absolutely nothing, so I am guessing this is my culprit..... Im not sure if there are any better ways to check operation of it?

So I will be getting one from Bud Curtis (Hals) tomorrow and seeing if it will fix the issue.

the servo is just a 12volt servo. use direct power to test it and see if it moves.

wiring diags. are on-line for this area.

The servo is indeed shot. I took it apart, pulled the gear out and it cycles but it cannot cycle under load so it looks like I need a new servo.
