I'm looking at buying an XB9R and I came across one that I thought was an excellent deal, but it turns out it was a misprint, and the price went up from $7500 to $8500 ($9000 w/ 1yr extended warranty). Because of the issues with the price being wrong, they're giving me the 1yr warranty at their cost ($509 as opposed to $699).

The bike I'm looking at is a brand new 03 that was used lightly for demos, it's only got 280 miles on it, and it's never been titled to anyone. Unfortunately it was registered w/ H-D, so even though I'd be the first title holder, there's no factory warranty on it. Given that it's still technically in it's break-in period, I want to get the 1 yr extended warranty, just in case break-in related issues come up.

It's already got the race kit ($620), the Custom Seat ($150), and the black windscreen ($125) on it. With a 1yr warranty, it's $9004. If I were to get a brand new 04 with the same stuff, it'd be ~$10,000. Now, the 04's have a 2 year warranty, as opposed to the 1yr I'm getting. If I were to get a 2 yr instead, it'd be another $200.

Now, when I first thought I was getting the bike for $7500, it was an excellent deal. Now that it's up to $9000, I'm not so sure. I'm only saving about $800 over buying brand new.

Technically I could get it for $8500 if I ditched the warranty, but like I said, I'm a bit uneasy about the whole break-in period.

Now, the same dealership also has an 03 that's totally stock with about 4000 miles on it, and they want $7500 for it.

What should I do? Should I go with the new 03, the used 03, or find another dealership?

No, you can get better then that. I have seen Brand new 0 mile XB9R's for that price. And some of the dealers are offering the extra year free.

Hmm, alright. Here's my problem, NONE of the dealers in my area have used 9R's or left overs from last year.

The 8%-10% depreciation for it being a year old doesn't seem like nearly enough to me.

Keeping in mind that the bike already has $900 worth of add-ons, what would you guys say is a fair price, with the $509 extended warranty? I'm going to have to give them a call tomorrow and give them some BS that my credit union won't lend me the money because they want so much more over book value for it, and see if I can talk them down over the phone.

I had a line on a brand new, no miles 2003 XB9R for $7000. You can do much better than $9000. Keep looking. Drive a few hundred miles to another dealer - it's worth it to save $2K.

$7000 for a brand new 9R? I find that hard to believe, I can't even find used ones with 4000+ miles on them for that much, anywhere. Like I said, I've already look at every dealer in New England, and nobody has anything but 04's, and I don't want to spend that much money.

Book value on a used 03 is $7500-$7900, I think I'll give them a call tomorrow and tell them I can't do much better than $8200.

I'm still trying to find out what a normal amount of depreciation is for a leftover vehicle, from a percentage standpoint.

Certain dealers have had new XB9's in the $6500 range. XB12's can be picked up for $8k or less if you want to search & possibly have it shipped.

Where are these dealerships selling 9's and 12's for thousands less that book value and/or MSRP?

RedSoxFox - Believe it. I had put a $500 deposit on a Blast and a Firebolt, both 2003's, zero miles, for $10K total. The Blast was $3K, the Firebolt was $7K. It was a dealer in Texas. If I hadn't gotten extended here, (&#&$^*&#%*&^@#^&$&@&!!!!!!!!!!!! ) then I'd be at home right now riding.

You're in New England - I grew up there. Take the price you see there, subtract 20%, and that's the price for the rest of the country...

If you want depreciation, just do a little homework and look up NADA prices, or Kelley Blue Book prices. Punch in a few different years, and see how much the price drops as the years go by.

Sean

PS - Just read another thread, I want a buell, but? that has some prices that Dyna graciously reposted for someone looking for a cheap XB9. Check it out.

Yeah, we get porked on prices up here. I could do the KBB or NADA thing, but that wouldn't give me the numbers I'm looking for. That would be giving me prices on used vehicles, that's not what I need. I'm looking for the percentage new leftover vehicles tend to depreciate when the next model year comes out.

Right now the 03 XB9R I'm looking at has only gone down about 10% from what an 04 would be. They're both brand new, the 03 is just a leftover bike that saw next to nothing for demo duty.

I think it's a little late in the model year for me to be able to find leftover 03's of other vehicles to be able to make a comparison, that's why I was asking here what kind of percentage left over vehicles go down.

Oh, ok, I was mistaken - thought you were looking for used bike prices. I don't know if there's any way to tell what an unsold new bike would be worth. I think it's basically up to the dealer. If they want to get it off their showroom floor, they'll sell it cheap. If it's something that they want to get their money's worth out of, they won't lower the price. You just have to shop around. Did you see the link that I added to my previous post?

Redsoxfox try some of the dealers in NY. There was one that had 04 12's going for those prices about 3 months ago. We are serious, there are lower prices to be had. Also they are taking you to the cleaners about not having the factory warrenty on a demo bike. Every demo bike I have looked at to purchase all still carried the factory 1 year warrenty. When I picked up my 9 it was a demo bike with 3K on it. 1 year factory started the date I picked it up and I paid $4000/$5000 out the door due to AZ's funky laws about titleing and set up. Yes, $1000 extra for titleing and setup.

If you ask me that xb9 you're looking at is used.

It's on someone's name so no factory warranty and it's got 280 miles. That's used to me.

You say lighty used ... I for one, would never want a demo bike since most ride like pigs on a demo bike. These rides are the worst miles for a bike. They don't get up to operating temperature, get ragged and slammed and not broken in the right way.

I'd take the advice to look somewhere else.

Since this was already a cross post from BuelletinBoard, here's my latest response over there...

Sorry guys, I'm not trying to be difficult, but it's impossible to find a decent price on a Buell around here. I stopped by Boston Harley-Davidson after work today, and they're still trying to get $8995 on a brand new 03 left over XB9R.

The thing about buying an 04 is that I don't want to put myself that far in debt, or pay the extra $500/yr in insurance for the 1 year difference. I was mulling it over today, and there's absolutely no way I'm paying the $9K they're asking. What I was thinking of doing was offering them $8K, take it or leave it, with the race kit/seat/screen and a 1yr warranty.

The way I figure it, the book value on the bike is $7500, and the $900 in goodies are probably worth about half of their initial retail value now that they're used. I'm going to call a few other dealers in the area and ask them about the demo warranty thing before I call Meredith Harley-Davidson (the place I've been talking about)

How does that sound? Or should I be going even lower than that?

My other option, albeit through the same dealer, would be to get an 03 9R with roughly 4000 miles on it. They're asking $7500 for that and it's totally stock.

If there's any truth to this site: http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm I'm not too worried about the bike possibly getting flogged on test rides.

I got out the door on my '03 9S with race kit for just under $9200. It had 2500 miles on it and I got the three year warranty. Take the warranty, tax, tag, and title and I ended up paying $7500 for the bike. Considering I could have got a new one for about $8800, plus it would have been $850 for the race kit and $1000 for the warranty, which are necessities to me, it seemed like a good deal to me...I bought it: )

Try $5500 as a book value. My 03 xb9s has 4900 miles, new tires, new brakes and that's what they just offered on a trade. But that's also why Orlando HD doesn't move any of the Buells they have on the floor. The same bikes are almost always there months later.

KBB Retail is $7655, Trade in is $5300, that makes book value for a dealership around $7500.

The difference between a good break in procedure and demo flogging is that the procedure is controlled, demo flogging is not.

I believe there is truth in motoman's break in procedure, but there is much more to it than simply flogging.

The problem with demo bikes IMO is that they do not reach operating temperature. Revving an engine and hard accelleration while the oil is thick and cold is not the proper way to break in an engine. Oil and engine needs to be warmed up.

Harldy anyone demo riding for half an hour to an hour is going to ride 25 miles to let the engine warm up because by the time you've done that it's time to return the bike.

I've seen some of these guys taking off on demo bikes and I happily pay the extra money for a new one.

Harleys and buells are generally more expensive here (europe) than in the states. I paid $8700 for my '03 firebolt, zero miles, special paint, 2 year factory warranty. How come the offer you're getting on the new and stock '03 in the states is even higher than what I paid?

Why don't you call some other dealers a bit further away and see what they have to offer? Isn't it worth to travel 500 miles and save a 1000 bucks or more? On the delivery day you have a nice ride home and by the time you get home, the bikes broken in Sounds cool enough to me ...

Look on cycletrader.com. There is a 2003 XB9R with race kit in VT for $5999. I'm in the market for the same bike but am in MN, and that's a long way to go! That looks like a great deal if it's in good shape. My local dealer wants $9999 for a 2003 used 9R with race kit! Can anyone suggest a good dealer within 500 miles of Minneapolis that I could find a 9R for $7k or less? I've been watching for over a month and cannot find a good deal on the bike I want.

Here's the update so far: I filled out a request for a quote for another dealer nearby. The guy from the dealership called me around noon, and I returned his call when i got off work. He was really cool, but couldn't really help me out. Apparently H-D has stopped shipping XB9R's for this year, so if a dealer doesn't already have new ones, they're not going to. There goes the idea of potentially getting a new one. He checked on his computer while I was on the phone with him, and he said if I drove to Connecticut or Maine, I might be able to get something. In either case, it's at least 3-4 hours to either dealership.

Now for the good news: he assured me that the warranty thing that Meredith H-D does is total bullshit. They may have registered the bike w/ H-D, but he said there is absoutely no reason for them to have done it (other than to sell extended warranties) and it actually defeats part of the purpose of the demo program. Now, I know some of you here, on BadWeb, and Sport Twin have already told me this, but it was the first confirmation I've gotten from a dealer.

Armed with that info, and the fact that I doubt my credit union will loan me more than $8000 for that bike (based on it's book value, not my credit), I'm going to call tomorrow and explain to them that we've got a few problems. First and foremost is the warranty. I've talked with many Buell and H-D owners, and a few dealerships and they've all said the same thing: your policy of registering warranties on demo bikes is out of line and not required by H-D at all. Either I get an extended warranty included in the purchase price of the bike or I walk. The next problem we have is that the purchase price would now be $8500. Book value on the bike is only $7500, so they're going to need to come down from $8500.. (this is where they mention it has a $1000 package on it). Firstly, it's only a $900 package, secondly it's a used package that isn't worth more than $500 now.

Hopefully after that they'll settle for $8000 including the warranty, and I'll be happy.

Ingemar: The offer I'm getting isn't on a stock bike, it's got the race kit, black windscreen, and custom seat. Regardless, the price it out of line. Also, you guys got a 2 year factory warranty on the 03's? Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but we only got a 1 year on the 03's.

Coldwthrrider: The bike in VT is 5 hours away one way, and I've got no way of really knowing the condition before I drive up there, it's practically in Canada. If the stealership doesn't negotiate down to $8000, I may call them, but it's far from being worth it to me unless it's my only option. And it's white, and I really don't like white vehicles of any kind.

Don't believe anything about "bike shortages". Most dealers end up shipping their unsold bikes to other dealers anyhow. Find the bike you want somewhere and have them ship it to you. DO NOT BUY this bike, it sounds like it has way too many "issues".
