I did the breather bypass about 150 miles ago and now there is smoke out of the filter, the kind of vapor like smoke, not blue or gray. Also there is knocking on the right side, where the push rods are. The bike seems to struggle more higher up the rev, and oil level is normal. All these are new. Can I ride the bike? Christopher |

not to promote other buell forums or anything but i got the directions for my reroute off buell xb .com and i did mine a few hundred miles ago, i dont have the vapor or smoke or anything from the filter, but i know some others have had it, if you read through the thread on the other forum under the DIY crank case breather mod i know some of them talked about it over there..... |

Thanks Iman501 and yes I saw that post too. I should take picture. I have a little Jack Daniel Black for catch can. And have so far maybe 10 drops in it, if that. I also made the little NOS energy drink but haven't try it yet. I bought a keg style Heineken can and Foster beer too, so to cover the charcoal canister with them. The Heineken looks like will fit just right and the Foster might be too long. Will see. Christopher |

I know the hydraulic lifters make some noise, a train like "chug chug" sound, not too loud but I can hear it in the background, sitting on the bike. But when I listen close to the exhaust I didn't hear it before. I hear clearly the new sound now by the exhaust, it sounds like the whole valvetrain doesn't get enough oil. It sounds louder after warmed up. Also, are the cylinders' color grayish? Like they're overheating, as compare to the case's color. Sorry I didn't pay attention as to what the color was before. Mine has vapors. Don't huff it, it's strong stuff! No problems with this from what I see |

And no, this doesn't mean your bike is overheating. It'll kick the fan and go into skip-spark mode if it's too hot |

OK. But why I didn't hear this before? |

i'm hearing the same "chug chug" sound. kind of loudish. not too worried, as every post i read says not to worry about it, but it seems like it's a "new" sound. hard for me to tell, as my special ops exhaust may have masked the sound before i switched back to a stock exhaust. planning on recording it in action to see if anyone can identify the sound. maybe it's just time for an oil change? |

What oil viscosity are you running? I run 20-50 in the hot months, and 15-40 in the cool months. Both sound totally different as far as the top end goes. Make sure the breathers are pushed all the way into the heads. |

The more familiar you get with the bike, the more "new" noises you will hear. |

Check helmet noise too. I had to borrow a helmet from a friend recently, and the bike sounds totally different through the other one. |

Sorry...but this has gotten sorta funny. People doing things to their bike that... 1. They have no idea why they are doing it 2. It doesn't need to be done 3. Reiterating #1, they haven't the foggiest idea what or why mechanical things are. Sorry Chris... Mike |

Actually, Xc, I think you've lost track. The thread is really about a noise following some mods. You are the one talking about oil, which is covered in the OP. |

Man... maybe this thread should get moved over to the flame section. I found this thread by searching for "chug chug," which is a sound my bike is making also. Was hoping to collect some input. At the end of my comment I made an aside about my oil, as I know that sometimes oil that has broken down, or is dirty, can cause valve noise. Said aside was then commented on by gunut. I was just answering his question about what oil I run. Certainly not trying to hijack this into an oil thread (as I know there are many). It just seems like there is a little unwarranted hostility here. I don't think it's unreasonable to not want semi-combusted fuel and oil blow- in one's airbox. I thought this forum was about building a community and helping people with problems, not scoffing at people that are not licensed mechanics. If me mentioning oil totally derailed this thread, then I apologize. But i can't see what Mike's biting post more relevant than me mentioning oil? And for that matter iam, how does you "calling me out" help this thread progress either? Both posts just sound like unprovoked personal attacks. pfft, Xc, lighten up, you obviously don't know what flames are. You initiated with your comment about Mike's, which wasn't a big deal. Neither was Mike's. Chris's limited skills had been acknowledged on his other thread. He was upfront about it and I don't think he was upset. Other than that, welcome aboard. |
